Freaky Friday: April Fool’s Day (1986)

Welcome to Freaky Friday, our ongoing series that highlights our extensive, awesome collection of free horror movies on Tubi TV. Whether you like blockbuster sequels, moody foreign films, or gore-filled comedies, we’ve got the film for your tastes. This week, we’re (appropriately) discussing the 1986 movie April Fool’s Day.

Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Sleepaway Camp were just a few of the slasher movies to terrify audiences in the ’80s, with plenty more titles that only the most ardent fan has heard of or seen. So when April Fool’s Day arrived in 1986, the subgenre was already going strong, with plenty of established tropes and audience expectations.

When the movie starts, Muffy St. John, Skip, Kit, Arch, and their other friends with less distinctively ’80s preppy names are spending the weekend of the title vacationing at Muffy’s island house. Soon, the college students start disappearing and dying one by one in the tradition of the subgenre. We won’t give too much away, but April Fool’s Day is a fun watch for fans, whether it’s the first day of April or any other time of the year.

If Arch looks familiar, that’s because he’s more well-known as quintessential ’80s villain Biff Tannen from the Back to the Future franchise. Valley Girl‘s Deborah Foreman stars as Muffy, and she followed up April Fool’s Day with Waxwork in 1988. Co-star Ken Olandt went on to Leprechaun. Horror fans may also recognize Amy Steel from her role in Friday the 13th Part 2.
