Welcome to Freaky Friday, our ongoing series that highlights our extensive, awesome collection of free horror movies on Tubi TV. Whether you like blockbuster sequels, moody foreign films, or gore-filled comedies, we’ve got the film for your tastes. This week, we’re screaming–and laughing–over John Landis‘ An American Werewolf in London (1981).
Two Americans are on vacation in the English moors when they go against the locals’ advice and try to take a shortcut. David (David Naughton) wakes up in a hospital, suffering from a mysterious bite, while his friend Jack (Griffin Dunne) didn’t survive the attack. It soon becomes clear that they fell victim to a werewolf, but the horror didn’t end on that moonlit night….
Not only is this horror comedy an essential in the subgenre for its deft balancing of terror and humor, but it also marks a landmark in makeup for horror films and the industry as a whole. Rick Baker won the first Academy Award for makeup here, and it’s clear why. The creature work holds up incredibly well after nearly 40 years, but not enough praise is given to the blood and gore on Dunne’s Jack when he appears to his friend after death.
