Candamo: Journey Beyond Hell
No films have been made from this area of the Amazon jungle, maybe for the obvious reasons of being a very hostile and remote area. This film is a story about three native men who decide to make an adventurous journey up some of the rivers, to a land they had heard been never seen. They travel up the Tambopata and Candamo rivers, beyond their own home community named Infierno, Spanish for Hell. They belong to an ancient native group, Ese'eja, who are the only, inhabitants of the area, formerly nomadic, now established right outside the reserved zone, which is in principal a National Park. But this is also the story about the amazing wildlife in the area, as seen through the eyes of the visitors. Instead of textbook explanations to biological wonders, we get to know the three mens relations to this nature, which for a long time has sustained their culture. Only by an intricate knowledge of the animals and the plants of the forest is survival here possible. The three men know the wildlife of this area.
