Inside the Vatican
Portraying everyday life inside the Vatican has been practically impossible up to now. But in this lighthearted two-part documentary, viewers are taken on an exclusive tour behind the forbidding walls of the tiniest state on earth. From the kitchens to the workshops, from the Vatican's fire department to its very own farm, the filmmakers capture the industriousness and cheer of those who work behind the scenes to keep Vatican City running smoothly.
S01:E01 - An Eastern Lamb
The first part of the documentary sets off on a journey of discovery through the Vatican City State, visiting garages, greenhouses and sewing rooms. The viewers encounter the people who work in the garage, the sacristy and the gun room, as well as hearing from the Pope's clothes designer what designs she creates for him. There are reports on the problems faced by the gilders vis-à-vis worm-eaten angels and on the people who sometimes hide out behind the marble statues in the stunning St. Peter's Basilica. In addition, footage of a fire brigade exercise shows how fires are extinguished in the Holy See. The camera also pans over the apostolic farmyard in Castel Gandolfo, where the animals are treated like people. The farmer in charge tells us what kind of meat the pontiff likes to eat and which of the Paschal lambs cannot be eaten under any circumstances. In the Vatican Observatory meanwhile, viewers can look out into the infinity of the universe with an astrologer and wonder about the Big Bang and how the world was created.
S01:E02 - Christmas Story
A walled enclave in Rome is the centre of the Catholic Church: Vatican City. The worlds smallest independent state in terms of inhabitants and size is ruled by the Pope and was founded 1929 following the signing of the Lateran Pacts between the Holy See and Italy. Its world of its own, a magical place full of legends and myths. Inside the Vatican A Christmas Story tries to reveal some of the best kept secrets and takes a look behind the scenes while Vatican City is preparing for Christmas.
