Worldwide there are more than 115.000 known species of algae 200 of them are extremely toxic! During algal bloom large sea areas of many square kilometres are contaminated by their neurotoxic substances. The consequence: millions of fish die and are flushed on to the beaches. The toxins are also absorbed by mussels and this way can enter the food chain of human beings. After eating contaminated mussels food poisoning, permanent loss of memory or death by apnoea can occur, depending on the kind and amount of neurotoxic substance. In 1995 eight guests of a restaurant in Amsterdam were hospitalized after eating mussels all had eaten from mussels that had come from a small breeding farm in Killary Fjord, in the west of Ireland. Even so the mussels have been intensely examined in a lab, it took more than ten years until scientists could detect the reason for the food poisoning. They discovered a new toxic species of algae. During a shipping expedition German and Irish researchers will investigate how the new pol

Return Of The Buffalo - Restoring The Great American Prairie
The vast area of the American prairie tells the story of an experiment that has been going for 150 years: the settlement of the American Midwest. Countless ghost towns define the appearance of deserted swathes of land. The radical vision of a scientist couple from New York sparked a new debate about the economic recovery of the region. Their plan is to make the Great Plains a public property, a common area, and reverse it to its original condition. Project Buffalo Commons is the attempt to turn back the demographics and history of the American west to the time before the settlement. Fences should be torn down to allow hundreds of thousands of buffalos to roam freely across the vast plains. The intended goal is that an expected rise in tourism and a highly efficient buffalo meat production will provide people of this region with security and a new future.
Operation Deep Sea: Shedding Light in the Darkness
Deep sea: 1000m below the surface no light, immense pressure and icy temperatures. The deep sea encompasses more than 90% of the planets habitat. Yet we know less about these depths than about the moon. This film documents the technical, scientific, and ecological challenges of deep sea researchers. Scientists work worldwide together to collect data on the physical state of the upper ocean. With more than 3000 autonomous floats they monitor the oceans for influences on weather systems like El Nino or the monsoon. Does it affect global climate change? Does the deep sea offer solutions for the CO2 issue? Researchers in the Okinawa Trough are trying to find out. The sea floor harbors enormous amounts of resources: oil, natural gas, methane. Scientists work hard to try and locate these materials. Millions of deep sea dwellers are waiting for their discovery. The Census of Marine Life is trying to catalogue these bizarre ocean creatures before they disappear. The expenditures comeing with these projects are enorm

Ships of the Desert
Camels are masters of the art of survival. They can go for up to ten months without a drop of water, then drink 200 litres in only 15 minutes, and even digest salt water. Domesticated as beasts of burden they laid the foundations of ancient long-distance trade, with salt and incense caravans regularly crossing the most hostile landscapes in the world. Today, camels are still the most important source of milk, meat, leather, wool, fertilizer and fuel in large parts of Africa and Asia, and for the Bedouins of Arabia. Unsurprisingly Bedouins call the camel Al-Ata Allah, the gift of God. Now medical researchers are exploring the miraculous properties of camels milk apparently effective against Alzheimers and cancer! The film shows camels defying the deadly conditions of the desert with their Bedouin owners; valuable decorated fighting camels, cosseted and pitched against one another in Turkey; Saudi Arabias unique hi-tech camel clinics; and feral camels in Australia, saved from the cull and coralled for re-expor
