A visionary approach to the old “serial killer” genre. In this high-tech (and eerily prophetic) thriller by award-winning writer-director Nico Mastorakis, Kirstie Alley plays a key role in the life of Jon Ratcliff (Joseph Bottoms), who is blinded in an accident, but is miraculously given modified sight again when an “optical” computer chip is implanted in his brain, allowing him to see images, but only in bold outlines. That’s when he witnesses a murder by the serial killer. The cat-and-mouse game begins. In reverse! In addition to the film’s technical foresights (in 1984, the concept of a blind person seeing again through an implanted device, was pure fiction), the film offers outstanding performances by Alley and Bottoms (both Golden Globe winners), as well as Golden Globe winner, Keir Dullea (Stanley Kubrick’s “2001, A Space Odyssey”) Marina (“Star Trek”) Sirtis, the first appearance by Valeria Golino (“Rainman,” “Hot Shots”) who went on to win 69 prestigious awards; and a pivotal part for Lana Clarkson. Music is by the late great Stanley Myers (“The Deer Hunter”) with songs by John Kongos. Best screenplay award for Nico Mastorakis and Fred Perry (Fanta Film Festival.)
