JASON, a young and reclusive computer savant living in California, attends an Artificial Intelligence Convention in Marseille. While there, he is tricked into making a fake video of a man having sex with a woman. Soon after, Jason discovers the video is all over the news. The man he faked is a senator and a presidential candidate. On a way to the airport Jason is kidnapped and locked in an underground basement of a villa in south France. He meets PHIL, an executive of a firm, Infinite Data, that manages HARRISON ROSe's US presidential campaign. He tells Jason that because of the senator sex scandal some people want him dead. He offers help and protection in exchange for faking other videos.Under Phil supervision, Jason creates a new fake: a hidden camera footage of a US governor taking a bribe. To insure the video is not recognized as a fake, Phil brings over KIM, a young, MIT graduate specializing in discovering fake videos. Fooled by Phil she thinks she's part of a research on fake news. Kim is forbidden to communicate directly with Jason but is allowed to watch him work. She's fascinated by the speed and perfection with which Jason recreates reality. When Kim sees the fake video of the bribe on the news, she questions Phil about it. He tells her somebody leaked the video, which is not so bad: the governor took many bribes before but could never be filmed. Now he'll be brought to justice.Cathrine, a chief of research and development at Infinite Data visits the villa and tries to learn more about eYe, a reality augmenting algorithm Jason uses in recreating reality. Jason doesn't want to talk. Cathrine wants to take Jason to her facility for further study but Phil doesn't let her. Jason must stay in the villa, he has a new job to do, faking a rocket with a chemical weapon being fired in the Middle east.Kim notices that Jason tries to contact her but when she goes into Jason's chamber she is quickly escorted out by TOM, a security guy hired by Phil. The fake rocket videos are all over the news. They trigger a war. Furious Kim confronts Phil about his lies. She manages to get Jason out of the basement and escape with him from the villa. Kim explains to Jason that Infinite Data does dirty work for US presidential candidate. They can repair the damage, let the world know about the fakes but they need to be very careful. Kim and Jason check in to a small secluded chalet in French countryside. Jason slowly opens up and tells her about his childhood, being diagnosed as mentally disabled, about computers being his only friends. He tells her that being with her makes him feel human for the first time in his live. They kiss.Jason reveals to Kim how the eYe works. It's a massive algorithm branching out into areas of computing, data analysis, charities and business operations. When Jason shows the current net value of the eYe Kim orders him to shut down the computer. She realizes what power Infinite Data could possibly gain if they get control of the eYe algorithm.Soon afterwards eYe reveals to Jason that Kim is not honest with him. When Jason confronts Kim about it she reveals that when Phil fired her and wanted to send away from the villa she offered to fake the escape so she can be alone with Jason and get him to open up about the eYe secrets. That was the only way she could be with Jason. She tells Jason that with the help of the eYe they can erase their traces and escape for real. Kim doesn't realize a hidden microphone sends her words to Phil. Tom shoots and kills Kim. Jason manages to escape. With the help of the eYe he is smuggled back into the US where presidential elections are in full swing. Jason settles in a secluded hut and sets on his revenge.
