Statistics show a quarter of all women and one in twenty men will be stalked in their lifetime. Come meet three victims who discuss their cases.
S01:E01 - The Sadistic Stalker
Tracey Morgan met her stalker, Anthony Burstow, in 1992. She had initially befriended him because she thought he was lonely but her kindness was repaid with a ten year campaign of harassment which only ended when Burstow was convicted of the attempted murder of another woman. Morgan recounts her fear and frustration at the lack of legal protection and what led her to fight for the first legislation to protect people from stalkers. Burstow was eventually sentenced for nine years. He is due for a parole hearing later in 2008/09 and, for Morgan, his possible release is a looming nightmare.
S01:E02 - The Ex-Partner Stalker
Clare Bernal, 22, had dated Michael Pech for just three weeks. Moments before closing time on 13th September 2004, Bernal smiled at her colleague, unaware that she had a gun pointed at her head. Moments later Pech shot the Harvey Nichols beauty consultant before turning the gun on himself.
S01:E03 - The Delusional Stalker
Rosie Garland is an artist and performer. She recites her own poetry on stage and, as a separate act, performs as Rosie Lugosi the Vampire-Slayer on the Northern Club gay scene. She also runs poetry workshops and made the mistake of praising Honor Donnelly, one of her class members. There followed a prolonged period of unwelcome, deeply menacing emails, culminating in Garland's stalker researching where her victim would perform and turning up to sit in the front row.
S01:E04 - The Cyber Stalker
The 6th of September 2003 should have been the happiest day of Debbie Pemberton and Dr. Jan Falkowski's life, as they were due to be married. Marchese's victims describe their terrifying ordeal and the irrevocable effect it has had on their lives.
S01:E05 - The Intimacy Seeking Stalker
Chay Ankers, a good-looking man in his 20s, made the mistake of under-estimating the impact of one-night stand. Anita Debnath wanted commitment, love, a relationship. When that was not forthcoming, she began a relentless text and email stalking campaign which lasted years and only ended when she was sent to prison for four years.
S01:E06 - The Killer Stalker
Candice Baker began a relationship with a casual acquaintance, Stuart Moran. A divorced mother of three, Baker had initially rejected his advances but, after talking over with friends his offer of a date, Baker changed her mind. The couple agreed to meet in a bar in Great Yarmouth. In an unbelievable twist, Baker was arrested by the police. Her stalker had planted a stash of drugs in her garden, which Baker's son discovered whilst playing. Baker stood trial for drug dealing and faced up to 10 years in prison, all because she had become involved with an ex-partner stalker.
