Dark Skies Is About to Make Your Own House Feel Suspicious
Strange noises are one thing. Strange events your entire family can't explain? Different problem. Keri Russell stars in the sci-fi horror movie Dark Skies, coming to Tubi September 24.
Remind MeHome is supposed to be where you lock the door and leave the scary stuff outside. Dark Skies has some unfortunate news about that.
Coming to Tubi September 24, the 2013 sci-fi horror thriller drops us into the suburban home of the Barrett family, where Lacy and Daniel are already dealing with the normal pressures of raising two sons when increasingly bizarre events begin invading their lives. Things move around the house. Disturbing incidents become harder to explain. Their children are affected. And eventually, “maybe we're imagining this” becomes a considerably less comforting theory than whatever the alternative might be.
Writer-director Scott Stewart doesn't need to send the family into an abandoned asylum or suspicious cabin to make things creepy. The terror comes directly to them, turning bedrooms, kitchens, nighttime routines, and the supposedly boring safety of suburbia into places worth watching very carefully. It'll fit right in with the unsettling company already waiting inside Terror on Tubi, where spooky season has considerably worse things lurking than a noise upstairs. Add Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton as parents realizing nobody else may be able to protect their family, and your September 24 watchlist just got significantly less relaxing.
The Cast
Keri Russell
Russell gives Lacy the increasingly frantic energy of a mother who realizes something is wrong long before she has the language, or evidence, to make anybody else understand it. Russell lets fear build gradually rather than playing Lacy at full panic from the beginning, moving her from confusion and concern toward the terrifying certainty that whatever is happening has targeted her family specifically.
Josh Hamilton
Hamilton plays Daniel from a more skeptical starting point. There's already pressure sitting underneath Daniel before anything unexplainable arrives, and Hamilton lets that frustration, fear, and instinct to protect his family gradually collide as the situation stops giving him rational explanations to hide behind. His chemistry with Russell makes Lacy and Daniel feel like parents trying to stay on the same team while something they don't understand keeps changing the rules.
Dakota Goyo
As older son Jesse, Goyo gives the movie a different kind of vulnerability. He's old enough to understand that the adults around him are scared but still young enough to be caught inside circumstances he has almost no power to control. Goyo plays Jesse's confusion and growing fear without making him simply “the terrified kid,” giving him enough teenage independence to make the moments when that confidence disappears hit harder.
J.K. Simmons
By the time Simmons enters the picture as Edwin Pollard, the Barretts desperately need somebody who might actually believe what they're telling him. Simmons brings exactly the kind of measured authority the role needs, playing Pollard as someone whose calmness is somehow more unsettling than panic would've been.
