R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead 2 Is Back for Another Redhaven Nightmare

Our spoiler-free review heads back to Redhaven for bigger supernatural stakes, Cassandra Peterson, and a new Halloween nightmare.

Watch Now

R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead 2 is officially streaming free on Tubi, bringing us back to the extremely unfortunate town where Sam and Becka already learned that Halloween traditions can come with more baggage than candy and costumes.

Nearly a year after their first supernatural encounter, the two find themselves facing another Pumpkinhead curse. Only this time, the threat could claim the entire town. Bean Reid and Adeline Lo return as Sam and Becka, while horror royalty Cassandra Peterson joins the nightmare as a mysterious witch with ties to Redhaven's ancient magic.

Yes, Elvira herself. The Mistress of the Dark has entered R.L. Stine's universe. Horror fans, please remain calm.

The first reactions point toward a sequel going bigger without abandoning the spooky-season fun at its center. Bloody Disgusting's review highlights its increased stakes, while Heaven of Horror calls attention to its Halloween atmosphere and Peterson's arrival.

We're keeping the major surprises buried, but there's plenty to unpack before pressing play.

Redhaven Has More Than One Nightmare Up Its Sleeve

A sequel has one very important job: give us a reason to come back. Writer-director Jem Garrard took that assignment seriously.

The original R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead introduced Sam and Becka to a town where seemingly ordinary Halloween traditions concealed something much darker. Returning to Redhaven means the sequel doesn't have to convince them, or us, that something strange is happening. It gets to ask a more interesting question: how much stranger can this town get? The answer begins with a new curse threatening the wider community, pushing the danger beyond the more personal stakes Sam and Becka previously encountered.

Garrard revealed in a recent ComingSoon interview that a direct sequel wasn't originally planned. After the first film performed well, Tubi approached the filmmaker about returning. Rather than finding another way to tell the same Pumpkinhead story, Garrard saw Redhaven itself as the opportunity. Instead of making the curse bigger simply because this is movie two, the sequel can make the town deeper. Cassandra's arrival helps open that door, connecting the present-day trouble to something older without requiring viewers to know exactly what's waiting there before pressing play.

One Halloween nightmare was just the introduction. Redhaven has been keeping receipts.

Elvira Has Entered the Pumpkin Patch

Cassandra Peterson playing a mysterious witch named Cassandra? We see the vision.

Peterson steps away from Elvira's signature black dress and towering hair for a character created specifically for this world. Instead of hosting the horror from a safe distance, she's stepping directly into it as someone with a much better grasp on the supernatural than the teenagers trying to survive it.

The casting gets even more fun once you consider Peterson's relationship with R.L. Stine. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Peterson discussed being drawn to the opportunity to portray a powerful supernatural character in horror accessible to younger audiences. She also told ComingSoon that she used to read Stine's books to her daughter, helping introduce her to the genre.

Now the pipeline is working in reverse. Speaking with Fangoria, Peterson joked about kids discovering her through Pumpkinhead 2 before their parents introduce them to Elvira. Luckily, Tubi has enough Elvira favorites to make that introduction properly spooky.

Honestly? We respect the hustle. One generation gets R.L. Stine. Another brings Elvira to the sleepover. Everybody gets appropriately spooky.

How Scary Is Pumpkinhead 2?

Horror fans know there's a very specific kind of magic to the movies that first made us afraid of the dark. Maybe it was a Goosebumps episode you weren't supposed to watch before bed. Maybe The Haunting Hour convinced you an ordinary object in your bedroom was plotting something. Years later, you remember the feeling. Pumpkinhead 2 appears particularly interested in keeping that tradition alive.

Garrard explained to Fangoria that horror aimed at younger viewers can still deliver genuine tension and emotional consequences without relying on extreme gore. They also discussed balancing those scares with humor and adventure rather than sanding all the sharp edges off the story, something that makes the Pumpkinhead movies particularly suited to Halloween viewing.

Published reviews suggest Pumpkinhead 2 stays in that lane. Bloody Disgusting approaches it as gateway horror, while Heaven of Horror notes its more fantastical and occasionally cartoonish sensibility. The movie isn't trying to win a gore contest with the bloodiest slashers in Tubi's Terror on Tubi collection. Its sweet spot is the kind of horror that lets younger viewers feel like they're testing the boundaries while longtime Stine fans get to remember doing the same thing.

Somebody has to introduce the next generation to being irrationally suspicious of Halloween decorations.

The Familiar Faces Returning to Redhaven

Bean Reid as Sam

Sam enters the sequel with one advantage his first-movie self didn't have: he knows Redhaven can bite back. Reid gets to approach Sam from a more battle-tested place, where experience hasn't necessarily made him fearless but has changed what he's willing to believe. He's already survived one impossible situation. Knowing better doesn't necessarily make the next one easier.

Adeline Lo as Becka

Becka isn't discovering the rules from scratch either. Lo brings Becka back as someone who can meet Sam inside the weirdness rather than needing to be convinced of it. Their shared history gives the pair a useful shorthand: when Redhaven starts behaving badly again, they already know disbelief isn't going to help much.

Cassandra Peterson as Cassandra

Peterson gets the fun inversion of being the person in a horror movie who may actually know what's going on. Her Cassandra enters with an understanding of forces Sam and Becka are still trying to navigate, letting the performer trade Elvira's winking horror-host distance for someone living directly inside the mythology. For an actor so closely associated with celebrating monsters from the outside, stepping into the supernatural story itself feels particularly fitting.

Redhaven Isn't Finished With Us Yet

Pumpkinhead 2 may be streaming now, but Tubi and R.L. Stine aren't packing away the decorations. Their next collaboration, R.L. Stine's Afraid of Clowns, is headed to Tubi in 2027, shifting the nightmare from the pumpkin patch to a very different reason to reconsider leaving the house.

There's also an R.L. Stine on Tubi panel scheduled for New York Comic Con on October 11, bringing together Stine, Garrard, Afraid of Clowns star Jimbo, and Tubi Chief Content Officer Adam Lewinson to discuss the collaboration and what's coming next.

For now, R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead is available for a refresher before diving into the sequel, and Pumpkinhead 2 is streaming free on Tubi now.

Redhaven survived the first curse. The second is waiting. Whatever comes after that can wait until we've made it through Halloween.
