That Viral Rumpelstiltskin Clip Isn’t From the 1987 Movie But the Real One Is on Tubi

TikTok has Rumpelstiltskin tiptoeing back into the group chat, but the real 1987 musical fantasy waiting on Tubi has some explaining of its own.

If your FYP recently introduced you to a tiny man in a sparkly jacket tiptoeing through a room full of straw like he has somewhere extremely important to be, we understand. We wanted him to be real too.

The internet has been putting the wonderfully strange clip to work, and honestly, look at him go. He's tiny. He's committed. Every tiptoe has purpose. Naturally, labeling the whole thing “Rumpelstiltskin (1987)” sent people looking for the gloriously bizarre old movie responsible for putting this little guy on film.

We regret to inform the group chat that he isn't actually in it. The viral dance appears to be AI-generated rather than footage from the 1987 movie, so there's no lost scene or forgotten musical number waiting to explain where our sparkly king is tiptoeing off to. We wish we had better news, too.

The search wasn't entirely for nothing, though. A real Rumpelstiltskin really did come out in 1987, and it's on Tubi. The musical fantasy follows Katie, a miller's daughter whose father's claim that she can spin straw into gold lands her in front of a very interested king and eventually Rumpelstiltskin himself, who is more than happy to make a deal. Terms and conditions very much apply.

Our viral tiptoeing legend may be missing, but TikTok has already sent us back to 1987. We might as well meet the Rumpelstiltskin who was actually waiting there, then keep the storybook detour going through Tubi's Fantasy collection. The internet opened this particular fairy-tale door. We're simply walking through it.

The Cast

Amy Irving as Katie

Katie gets stuck cleaning up a mess created by somebody else's bragging, and Irving gives the miller's daughter a sweetness that keeps the increasingly ridiculous fairy-tale stakes grounded. Once her father's claim lands her in front of a king demanding actual gold from actual straw, Irving lets Katie's vulnerability coexist with the determination needed to navigate Rumpelstiltskin's bargains.

Billy Barty as Rumpelstiltskin

Rumpelstiltskin needs to be mischievous enough that accepting his help immediately feels questionable, and Barty commits to the assignment with gleeful theatricality. His version of the magical trickster bounces between helpful, demanding, playful, and threatening depending on what the bargain requires, giving the movie much of its fairy-tale weirdness. Barty was already a veteran performer by 1987, but Rumpelstiltskin gave him his only feature-film lead role. Nearly four decades later, an AI impostor has somehow sent the internet back his way.

Clive Revill as King Mezzer

King Mezzer hears that someone can turn straw into gold and reacts exactly as a greedy fairy-tale monarch should: more gold, please. Revill embraces the king's appetite for wealth with broad comic authority, making Mezzer feel less like a realistic ruler and more like the oversized obstacle this particular storybook world demands. His escalating expectations are what turn one foolish boast into Katie's increasingly impossible problem, giving Revill plenty of room to make royal entitlement part of the joke.

“Bring the straw. I’ll bring the song and a little trouble.”
