Let's just say you can't keep a good corpse down. Thirty years after his last new material, the Crypt Keeper has officially crawled back into hosting duties for AMC's anniversary celebration of FearFest. John Kassir is once again supplying that unmistakable voice and cackle, while horror effects legend Greg Nicotero rebuilt the puppet for a new generation of boils and ghouls.

Longtime Tales From the Crypt fans already know what happens when that cackle starts. Someone is about to have a terrible night.

The horror anthology is streaming free on Tubi, bringing back short, nasty stories where bad behavior has a habit of returning with teeth. One episode might send an escaped killer dressed as Santa to your door. Another could introduce somebody who's extremely confident they've figured out how to cheat death. New story, new characters, new opportunity to yell at the screen because absolutely nothing good can come from what they're planning. And hovering over all of it is the Crypt Keeper, ready with a pun so bad you may briefly forget somebody just died horribly.

For longtime fans, consider the crypt reopened. Newcomers? No lore homework required. Just pick a nightmare and try not to end up as the punchline.

Tales From the Crypt Has Always Been in on the Joke

Tales From the Crypt understands something very important about horror: being scared and having fun are allowed to happen at the same time.

Inspired by the classic EC Comics, the series has a particular affection for people making spectacularly bad choices. Greed. Revenge. Jealousy. Murder plots that seem absolutely foolproof right up until the universe starts taking notes. The genre can shift from slasher to supernatural horror to dark comedy, the same anything-goes spirit that makes Terror on Tubi a fitting home for the Crypt Keeper's many flavors of bad news. But whatever shape the nightmare takes, there's often a wonderfully mean question waiting underneath: how badly is this going to come back on them?

Twenty-something minutes later, the universe would like a word. That nasty sense of humor is what keeps the show from feeling like a straightforward collection of cautionary tales. The punishments can be gruesome, ironic, ridiculous, or all three at once, and the show rarely pretends it isn't enjoying the setup.

Then the Crypt Keeper gets his turn. Kassir gives the show's skeletal host the energy of someone who has already read the ending and can't wait for you to catch up. He isn't simply introducing the horror; he's part of the experience, greeting viewers like fellow members of a very questionable little club before sending them into the next story.

The puns remain criminal. The commitment remains admirable. And after three decades away, the Crypt Keeper still has material.

You Never Know Who Is About to Have a Terrible Night

Recognizing the person onscreen does not mean they're safe. Actually, Tales From the Crypt may be an excellent place to stop making that assumption.

Across its seven-season run, the anthology attracted a guest list that now feels slightly absurd: Brad Pitt, Demi Moore, Catherine O'Hara, Steve Buscemi, Joe Pesci, Brooke Shields, Christopher Reeve, and John Lithgow all took their chances with the Crypt Keeper.

The real fun is discovering what the show plans to do with them. An anthology doesn't have to protect somebody because they're needed next season. A recognizable star can be the hero, villain, victim, or person currently making a decision they'll regret approximately 18 minutes from now. Celebrity status does not come with plot armor. Sometimes it just gives the Crypt Keeper a more recognizable victim.

The talent behind the camera makes hitting “next episode” equally unpredictable. Robert Zemeckis, Tobe Hooper, and William Friedkin directed installments, while Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Michael J. Fox were among the actors who also stepped behind the camera during the show's run. That rotating talent gives the crypt room to keep changing shape. One episode can play like a nasty little slasher. Another can lean into revenge, monsters, relationships gone catastrophically wrong, or a joke whose punchline happens to involve a body count.

You may not know exactly what kind of horror you're getting next. That's part of the fun.

Seven Seasons Doesn't Mean Seven Seasons of Homework

Seeing “seven seasons” can activate a very specific streaming anxiety. How many episodes until it gets good? Do I need to remember somebody from Season 1? Is there a Reddit diagram involved? Relax.

Tales From the Crypt is the rare long-running show where jumping around is practically part of the appeal. Each episode tells its own story, so your starting point can depend entirely on what kind of bad evening you're in the mood to witness. It's a freedom anthology horror is still having fun with today; our Bite Size Terror preview explores 10 completely different short-form nightmares from Tubi's Original Bite Size Terror, a horror anthology, where finishing one story gives you almost no protection against whatever the next one has planned.

Want Christmas horror? “And All Through the House” introduces an escaped killer dressed as Santa and a woman having an already exceptionally complicated holiday. Feel like gambling with increasingly terrible stakes? “Cutting Cards” has two rivals who refuse to know when enough is enough. Prefer choosing entirely because you recognize the guest star? Honestly, the crypt supports that strategy too.

Once you've found your footing, Tubi's Binge If You Dare collection can keep the horror-TV rabbit hole going. But Tales From the Crypt makes the first click especially easy: you don't need to commit to an entire seven-season story. You need about half an hour to meet somebody who's becoming dangerously confident that their terrible plan is going to work.

The Crypt Keeper will handle the rest.
