The Inhabitant Makes the Lizzie Borden Legend a Family Problem

Lizzie Borden is back in the conversation, but The Inhabitant has a different question: what if being connected to her made you afraid of what you might be capable of? The psychological horror movie is streaming free on Tubi.

More than 130 years later, people are still talking about Lizzie Borden. The axe murders. The trial. The acquittal. The rhyme that somehow turned one of America's most infamous murder cases into something generations of kids could casually recite. Every few years, pop culture finds another reason to open the case again.

The Inhabitant takes that fascination somewhere considerably more personal. In the movie's fictional story, teenager Tara is a descendant of Borden, and lately her family history has started feeling less like an interesting fact and more like a warning. She's experiencing violent visions and intrusive thoughts she can't explain. Then people in her small town start getting murdered, evidence begins pointing uncomfortably close to her, and the question Tara is already terrified to ask becomes impossible to ignore: what if she's capable of doing exactly what everyone expects from someone with her last name?

The unsettling part is how quickly knowing the Lizzie Borden connection changes the way you look at Tara. A strange reaction becomes suspicious. An intrusive thought suddenly feels like evidence. Tara starts questioning herself at exactly the same time the movie encourages us to do it too, turning her own mind into one more place where she can't feel completely safe.

For spooky season, that's a pretty effective reason to keep Terror on Tubi nearby. Our true-crime watchlist takes the fascination with real cases in another direction when you're ready to leave fiction behind. You know the Lizzie Borden legend. The Inhabitant wants to know what happens when somebody grows up believing the legend might be living inside her.

The Cast

Odessa A'zion

Being afraid of your own thoughts gives Tara an unusual place to start, and A'zion keeps her suspended between fear and suspicion without making it easy to decide whether she should trust herself. Tara can seem genuinely frightened by what she's experiencing one moment and unsettling enough the next to make you reconsider your assumptions, leaving A'zion to play investigator and potential suspect at the same time.

Leslie Bibb

Bibb brings a tightly controlled quality to Tara's mother, Emily, whose concern for her daughter exists alongside a family history neither of them can simply ignore. Bibb makes that maternal protectiveness feel complicated rather than automatically reassuring, which is useful in a movie where family is exactly where Tara has been taught to look for answers.

Dermot Mulroney

Inside a household increasingly consumed by fear and suspicion, Ben becomes one of its steadier presences. Mulroney keeps Tara's father grounded and concerned rather than immediately panicked, giving the family someone still trying to hold onto rational explanations while those explanations become increasingly difficult to defend.

Lizze Broadway

Normal teenage life hasn't completely disappeared for Tara, and Suzy is one of her strongest remaining connections to it. Broadway brings an easy familiarity to their friendship that contrasts with the suspicion building elsewhere, helping remind us that Tara existed as an ordinary teenager before murder and family history started rewriting how everybody sees her.

“You can blame the bloodline, but the axe still lands here.”
