The Witches of Eastwick Knew the Perfect Man Was Suspicious

Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer wished for the man of their dreams. Jack Nicholson answered. Nearly 40 years later, the red flags remain.

Three women describe their ideal man. The universe sends Jack Nicholson. There were signs.

Nearly 40 years after The Witches of Eastwick arrived in 1987, witches are having another very good year. Practical Magic 2 has the Owens women back in the conversation. American Horror Story is returning to Coven territory. Spells, covens, witchy wardrobes, female power, and the general suspicion that your friends might solve several problems if everyone simply gathered around a candle are culturally thriving again.

Eastwick was already having that conversation in enormous hair. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie are three friends whose conversations about the man missing from their lives appear to summon Daryl Van Horne, a mysterious newcomer with a mansion, unlimited confidence, and an immediate interest in all three women. Desire gets louder. Strange abilities start surfacing. Eastwick gets a lot more interesting.

But describing the plot only gets you so far with this one. The movie is glamorous, strange, funny, grotesque, theatrical, and extremely aware that putting Cher, Sarandon, Pfeiffer, and Nicholson in the same movie was not an occasion for restraint. Some parts are unmistakably 1987. Other parts feel suspiciously ready for the current witch renaissance. Tubi's Witch, Please collection has plenty of modern spell-casting nearby, and seven witch movies and shows for the Practical Magic 2 era can keep the coven occupied afterward.

For now, we're going back to Eastwick. The cherries alone deserve a revisit.

The Cast

Jack Nicholson as Daryl Van Horne

Subtle was never going to survive this assignment. Nicholson lets Daryl swagger, seduce, provoke, and occupy every room like it belongs to him, making his charisma entertaining before the ego underneath becomes impossible to ignore. He loves powerful women way more when he thinks he's responsible for their power.

Cher as Alexandra Medford

Alexandra has a confidence problem before she has a magic problem, and Cher makes her dry wit and skepticism part of the appeal. She's attracted to Daryl without immediately buying everything he's selling, and Alexandra's growing comfort with her desires and power lets Cher's restraint stand out against the supernatural chaos around her.

Susan Sarandon as Jane Spofford

Jane begins as the buttoned-up member of the trio, giving Sarandon plenty of room to let her unravel. Sarandon throws herself into Jane's growing sensuality and confidence with such physical commitment that even playing the cello becomes one of the movie's most unforgettable displays of liberation.

Michelle Pfeiffer as Sukie Ridgemont

Sukie's softness could easily disappear beside bigger personalities, but Pfeiffer makes her warmth part of the character's strength. Her romantic openness makes Daryl's attention understandably intoxicating, while the connection she shares with Alexandra and Jane ultimately feels more meaningful than the fantasy he offers.

“You wished for the man of your dreams. You forgot to read the fine print.”
