X Turns a Texas Farmhouse Into One Very Bad Place to Make a Movie

Ti West’s ’70s-set slasher brings Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, and Kid Cudi to rural Texas for an X-rated movie shoot with a horror problem waiting off camera. Coming to Tubi on October 1.

Remind Me

Making an independent movie already requires optimism. You need a location, a camera, a cast willing to commit, and enough confidence to believe the whole thing might actually lead somewhere. Preferably, your elderly hosts aren't quietly making the property increasingly unsafe while you're working. X has unfortunate news on that last part and is arriving on Tubi October 1.

Director Ti West drops us into rural Texas in 1979, where aspiring actress Maxine Minx and a small film crew rent a farmhouse to secretly shoot an adult movie they hope will be their ticket to something bigger. The location is isolated. Their hosts, Howard and Pearl, are considerably more interested in their guests than anybody realizes. And as daylight disappears, the dream of making a movie starts competing with the much more urgent goal of making it off the property alive.

West knows exactly what kind of slasher history he's playing with, filling X with the genre's familiar ingredients while making them feel grimy, intimate, and deeply uncomfortable: '70s atmosphere, uneasy silence, sudden violence, and the feeling that somebody is watching even when the frame looks empty. Our guide to the slasher movies that defined the genre goes further back through the bloodline; X shows what happens when a modern filmmaker gets his hands on it. Add Mia Goth doing considerably more than the average Final Girl assignment, and Terror on Tubi has another very good reason to ruin your relaxing movie night.

Welcome to the farm. Maybe don't unpack.

The Cast

Mia Goth as Maxine Minx and Pearl

Goth plays both sides of X's obsession with youth. As Maxine, she's hungry, confident, and convinced stardom is waiting for her; under extensive prosthetics as Pearl, Goth transforms that energy into longing, resentment, and menace. The performances mirror each other without making either woman feel like a gimmick.

Jenna Ortega as Lorraine

Ortega gives Lorraine a guarded quietness that gradually makes room for curiosity. As the reserved girlfriend observing the shoot from behind the camera, Ortega makes Lorraine's shifting perspective feel like a young woman actively reconsidering what she wants rather than simply playing the slasher's designated innocent.

Brittany Snow as Bobby-Lynne

Snow's Bobby-Lynne has an easy confidence that pushes her beyond the blonde slasher archetype. She's funny, warm, and completely unapologetic about who she is, with Snow making that self-assurance feel natural rather than performative.

Kid Cudi as Jackson Hole

Cudi brings Jackson a relaxed charisma and the confidence of someone who isn't particularly worried about anybody else's approval. That easygoing presence makes the moments when the Vietnam veteran becomes more alert to the danger around him feel like a genuine shift rather than another horror-movie reaction.

“Keep the camera rolling. This night has one more scene for you.”
