Jane's defiance of her tyrannical aunt has led to her exile to the harsh Lowood School.

Conditions improve at Lowood and Jane finds peace both as a pupil and later as a teacher.

Jane is employed as a governess for Adele. She meets her surly master, Mr. Rochester.

Jane is fascinated by Mr. Rochester who seems more than usually interested in her.

Mr. Rochester is entertaining guests and Jane is upset by his fondness for Blanche Ingram.

Summoned by her aunt, Jane returns to Gateshead Hall, the scene of her unhappy childhood.

Mr. Briggs interrupts Jane and Mr. Rochester's wedding with some scandalous information.

A despondent Jane is offered shelter by the Rivers family.

St. John protests the idea of marriage to Miss Oliver and Jane's true identity is revealed.
