Zeb Macahan comes home to Virginia after being away for ten years, his family is worried by talk of the Civil War. Zeb's brother Timothy and his wife, Kate, decide to move west.

Ex-Captain Grey is a bounty hunter who is hunting down army deserters, with Luke currently at the top of his list.

Luke has taken a liking for the Simonites, especially the young and beautiful Erika who has looked after him.

Zeb attempts to save the life of his friend. Luke realizes he cannot stay with the Simonites and Erika decides to follow him. Meanwhile, the rest of the family finds itself in the midst of an Indian tribal war.
