Ex-policeman Jackson Brodie is working as a private eye when he meets sisters Amelia and Julia Land, who ask him to investigate the disappearance of their little sister Olivia thirty years earlier. Meanwhile, Theo Wynne enlists Brodie to examine the recent murder of his teenaged daughter and Jackson begins having vivid flashbacks of the traumatic murder of his sister years ago.

Jackson seems to be collecting lost girls. Along with his continuing investigation into the killing of Laura Wyre and the disappearance of Olivia Land, Jackson decides to help a mysterious seductress — who secured his services via an unorthodox method — find her niece, all whilst dealing with the knowledge that his ex-wife is moving to New Zealand with his beloved daughter.

Brodie is the lone witness to a possible drowning in the Firth of Forth when he spots a woman's body in the water — but is unable to prevent it from floating out to sea. The police appear less than enthusiastic about investigating, so Brodie decides to do it himself. In other events, a crime novelist intervenes in a case of road rage, and a comatose crook's wife and dominatrix bond unexpectedly.

Louise, Marcus and Jackson arrive at Martin Canning’s house where they discover a body battered to death. Martin pleads with Jackson to be his bodyguard. Now, Jackson must determine why a road rage attacker wants to kill him and another bystander who witnessed the incident, what the attacker has to do with a shady cleaning business and how it relates to the body Jackson saw at sea.

Jackson is released from jail following his arrest as Andrew Jones. His arrest having triggered a connection with the Joanna Hunter case, he picks up a lead on the missing mother and child, and learns that the husband knows more than he has been willing to admit. Meanwhile, Marcus has become caught up in the cheating wife case that Jackson just can't shake.
