A group of actors and artists are at the peak of their creative powers. None of them expects that their democratic society will suddenly turn into an authoritarian regime.

A pre-war film magnate sets his destiny by selling his studios to the Germans. In return, however, Czech films can be made, even with a state subsidy.

An actor follows his Jewish wife to the concentration camps. Milos Havel organizes various events to rescue artists.

The war is over. People seek to avenge the deaths of their loved ones by blaming and going after those who cooperated with the Germans.

The 1950s arrive and people must pretend in this new society. Some are silent, others quietly resist and others create a new persona to survive the new era.
