The Repair Shop
Season 5 Episode 56 - Stowaway Bike, Surgeons Case, Loch Ness Binoculars
Today in the Repair Shop, Jay Blades and the team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life.First to arrive are sisters Sue and Kath Coffey from Reading, wheeling along a childhood favourite, that's in desperate need of the expert tinkering of vintage bike restorer Tim Gunn. The 1960s bike travelled all over the world with the sisters and their family, following their diplomat father. The sisters have wonderful memories of exploring new places on this faithful bicycle. However, it's now overwhelmed by rust and can no longer be ridden. Tim dismantles their old friend, cleans and oils each of the components and returns the bike in tip top shape - ready for more adventures. The next visitor to the barn is Clare Jackman from Pulborough. She brings a century old, small leather case that served her great aunt, who was a trailblazing female surgeon in the 1930s. She is hugely proud of her great aunt's achievements and is keen to have the case restored as a testament to her memory. However, the case is in a terrible condition - battered, water damaged and falling apart. Master saddler Suzie Fletcher rolls up her sleeves and restores it back to health. Finally, Simon Dinsdale from Essex needs optics expert Richard Biggs to take a look at a memento that's of 'monstrous' significance! The mini binoculars were used by his father in the 1960s on his tireless hunt for the Loch Ness Monster. Simon's father was the first to capture footage of the legendary beast and he can still picture his adventure loving dad wearing them round his neck. Richard must remove years of grime and tackle the focus mechanism. He then raids his stash of vintage spare parts to replace the two chipped prisms, finds new eye cups and neck strap and soon transforms them into a sight for sore eyes.
