Moonlight Resonance

The story begins in 1996 outside Moonlight Cake Shop. Everybody is waiting to buy cakes but only egg tarts are available since the shop owner CHUNG SIU HOR has gone to the court. HOR is fighting for the custody of her six children with her ex-husband KAM TAI CHO. During the hearing, HOR blames CHO for not knowing the children well and for committing adultery with YAN HUNG. After reviewing the case, the judge grants the custody of WING KA, WING YUEN and WING CHUNG to CHO. On the other hand, HOR is granted the custody of WING HO, WING HING and her adopted daughter SUEN HO YUET. Ten years later, HOR’s younger sister SIU SA returns from Portugal. Her father CHUNG FAN TAT prepares dinner for her on the 16th of August of the Lunar calendar. SA realizes that HOR can only meet up with KA, YUEN and CHUNG on the next day of the mid-autumn festival. HOR recalls that CHO wanted to have seven children when they get married. The seven children’s names are KA, HO, YUET, YUEN, HING, CHUNG and CHAU, which means that the w family is celebrating mid-autumn festival under the full moon harmoniously. In a mid-autumn festival, TAT suggests to give HUNG’s daughter SO SUM a nickname CHAU so that they could fulfill their wish of having the seven names. HO meets SUM on a ferry and SUM tells him that she has become a trainee doctor.

CHO’s mother KWAN LAI suddenly comes to the cake shop to scold HOR. HOR’s neighbors find LAI extremely unreasonable so they help kicking her away. HING uses sign language to talk to his family members. SA misconceives that he is teasing her and she reveals to everybody that she has divorced with her husband. After divorcing with HOR, CHO tried to draw HOR’s cake master LIN CHI YUNG to his cake shop by paying him higher salary. After that, HOR had no choice but to give up selling moon cakes. SUM follows HO to his home and she spends a great time with her childhood friends. HO asks LAI to allow all grandchildren to dine with their grandfather TAT on mid-autumn festival and LAI agrees. HUNG requests CHO to take away the signboard of Moonlight Cake Shop at HOR’s shop. CHO visits HOR and HOR tries to lock SA in the room. HO learns that CHO comes to make an unreasonable request and he releases SA deliberately. SA rushes out to kick CHO away with a broom. HOR wants all the children to dine with TAT on mid-autival so she agrees to change the signboard of her cake shop.

TAT prepares the dinner menu for his grandchildren happily. However, he suddenly learns that LAI has changed her mind and he is very disappointed. LAI suddenly refuses to allow TAT dining with the grandchildren because she recalls a past grievance about her deceased son TAI CHEUN. During the time, CHEUN tried to borrow money from HOR but HOR refused. CHEUN had no choice but to commit suicide eventually. HOR requests CHO to keep his promise. HUNG discovers that YUNG wants to move to another shop so she fires him and warns all other cake shops not to hire him. YUNG doesn’t know what to do and he turns to HOR for help. HUNG discovers this and she prevents the grandchildren from dinning with TAT. HOR calls HUNG to apologize and HUNG is satisfied. HUNG discovers that SUM is joining the reunion dinner and she is enraged. She rushes to the restaurant with LAI to stop everybody from having the dinner. LAI asks all grandchildren to leave immediately and she reiterates that it was HOR who “killed” CHEUN. YUNG canar to tell the truth behind CHEUN’s death

During breakfast, HUNG apologizes to the sons and she tries to explain her relationship with CHO to them but KA responds to her coldly. In fact, KA never recognizes HUNG as his mother from the very beginning. CHUNG is going to continue his study in England. HOR discovers that CHUNG acts strangely in Hong Kong and she wants to find out the reason behind. HOR rushes to the airport but she cannot get close to CHUNG when CHO and HUNG are around. SA is against YUET all the time for she thinks that YUET is only an adopted child and they fight with each other all the time. YUET discovers that TAT suddenly withdraws all his savings and she informs HOR immediately. HOR questions SA for the reason of borrowing 400 thousand dollars from TAT. SA reveals that she needs the money for a lawsuit with her ex-husband. With the help of SUM, HO accompanies HING to a job interview and HING gets the job successfully. HING delivers an urgent document to Tsim Sha Tsui but she loses her way…

HOR meets up with KA and she asks KA if he has carried out his promise to take care of YUEN and CHUNG. HO deliberately asks her eldest son KA to stay with CHO ten years ago so that KA could take care of his younger brother and sister. SA borrows money from TAT again and TAT reminds her to treat YUET kindly. SA tries to please YUET but they end up fighting with each other again. YUET suddenly decides to move out and live with her friends. HO rejects the idea but YUET insists to do so. YUET has actually rented a small flat for herself alone. She is broke for she has borrowed money from the credit company on behalf of her boyfriend. SA discovers an email from YUET in HING’s mailbox and she prints it out to everybody. YUET’s boyfriend fails to pay the debt and YUET is fired because of this. YUET is afraid of the creditors so she tries not to return to her little flat. All family members finally find YUET. YUET returns home but SA continues to criticize her. HOR cannot bear to scold SA angrily

TAT and HOR are worried for SA has been disappeared for 4 days. However, SA suddenly shows up and invites everybody to a dinner. During the dinner, SA reveals that she will go to Portugal for a lawsuit soon. KA is not able to find 2 models for a product launch event so he asks his two younger sisters to do the job. KA also convinces his boss ELIZA to hire YUET as an assistant. A westerner comes to the cake shop to buy cakes and SUM helps with the translation. HOR wants to treat SUM for dinner but SUM suggests that she wants to join a charity event instead. SUM and HO joins a charity walkathon together and they recall the memories in the past. SUM opens HO’s letter at home and realizes that HO gave up studying in order to help HOR in the cake shop. SUM realizes that she had helped breaking up the family unintentionally. KA promises HOR that he will stop trading stocks but he is still addicted to stock exchanges.

HOR asks CHO out and reveals to him that KA is addicted to stock trading. CHO discusses the case with LAI. He suggests that KA should work in the cake shop and LAI agrees. CHO organizes a birthday celebration for SUM. He seeks for HUNG’s permission for allowing KA to work in the cake shop and HUNG agrees eventually. CHO suggests KA to handle their cake shop business during dinner and HUNG only wants KA to work in the smallest cake shop. Nobody follow up the case eventually. SA suddenly appears again and she reveals that she has got 4 million dollars compensation from her ex-husband. She wants to become a shareholder of HOR’s cake shop and HOR agrees reluctantly. SA plans to expand their business so she tries to recruit cake master by herself. HOR discovers that all the cake masters hired by SA are not qualified and SA is embarrassed. SA persuades TAT to name the cake shop as “Moonlight Cake Shop” again. CHO requests TAT to dismantle the signboard of Moonlight Cake Shop. TAT is enraged and he nearly fi CHO for this.

SA requests CHO to make a compensation of 50 million dollars to the cake shop. CHO and HUNG object the idea and they fight with SA in the court. CHO and HUNG tell lies in the court and they claims that HOR voluntarily handed over the brand name of “Moonlight Cake Shop” to them long time ago. SA loses the case and she calls HUNG a drug smuggler outside the court. HUNG is enraged. She decides to sue SA for defamation and she requests for a compensation of 4 million dollars. HOR decides to apologize to HUNG on behalf of SA even though all her children object the idea. HOR and YUNG arrive at HUNG’s place and they promises to give 200 thousand dollars compensation to HUNG but HUNG responds to her with harsh words. While sending HOR away, HUNG deliberately makes her fall and HOR is hurt. HOR cannot bear to reveal the tricks played by HUNG. Long time ago, HUNG asked YUNG to teach KA all about stock trading and this had made KA a stock addict. HOR also accuses HUNG for playing tricks on KA and YUEN all the timesunite the family. CHO cannot bear it anymore and he voluntarily suggests that they will not sue SA.

On the next day, LAI is absent for breakfast and HUNG goes to LAI's room to apologize. HUNG cries for mercy in front of LAI and LAI finally forgives her. SUM starts working in the hospital and she comes across a traffic accident while chatting with HO on the phone after work. HO rushes to the scene to help the victims with SUM. He also buys clothes and shoes for SUM to change for he knows that SUM is going to have dinner with the family. SUM is very grateful about it. KA is not able to hand in his report on time. He tries to solve the problem by kissing ELIZA voluntarily. On the next day, YUET tells KA that he has caused huge loss to the company by not carrying out his duty properly. KA tries to please ELIZA by sending her flowers but ELIZA fires him in return. ELIZA had tolerated KA for a long time simply because HUNG sent her many gifts before. HO brings his girlfriend TING TING to a family dinner. However, TING suddenly wants to separate with him after the dinner.

HO invites CHO for dinner at home. CHO is shocked to meet CHUNG there because CHUNG is supposed to be studying in England. CHUNG wants to quit schooling and HO supports him. CHO calls for a family meeting and blames HO for spoiling CHUNG. CHUNG cannot bear to tell the truth about his inability in studying. CHO finally accepts the reality but he asks everybody to keep this secret. KA suddenly borrows 30 thousand dollars from WING HO because he wants to move away from the KAM’s family. KA meets an old neighbor Granny WAN and he realizes that WAN loses all her money in the stock market. YUET discovers that KA didn’t rent a flat. She misconceives that KA uses the money to buy stocks again and she wants to tell HO about this. KA fails to stop YUET and he gets mad. Everybody organize a surprise birthday party for SA and SA is overjoyed

SA introduces her good friend Mr CHU to YUNG. CHU wants to open a Chinese style franchise cake shop in Australia and he decides to hire YUNG as the cake master. YUNG realizes that he can reunite with his younger sister CHUI PING who studies in Australia and he is overjoyed. YUNG reveals his plan to HO and HO wishes him all the best. HO suffers from backache and the doctor suggests her to have an operation for removing the spur and all her children are nervous. LAI visits WING HO at the cake shop. SA invites her for a walk with YUNG. They consoles LAI and convinces her to let go of the past. SA discovers that CHUNG cannot read simple Chinese and English. She therefore calls him a half illiterate. CHUNG cries silently at the corner of a basketball court. His brothers and sisters come to console him. They also persuade him to join a boat contest. HO tries to watch CHUNG’s boat contest through her mobile phone before the operation.

HO’s operation is successful and everybody come to visit her at the hospital. When CHO visits her, HO reveals to him that she wants to teach CHUNG on her own. LAI returns home to find that KA is moving out. KA wants to open a PR firm and he takes it as an excuse for moving out. TAT and everybody decide to take CHUNG home. SA discovers their plan and she calls LAI secretly to reveal the truth. LAI is enraged. She threatens everybody that she will stop eating and taking medicine until CHUNG and KA return home. After discussing with HUNG, LAI also forces CHO to swear that he will not meet up with HO again. CHO has no choice but to swear in front of LAI. All the grandchildren come to visit LAI. HING indirectly reminds LAI about her selfishness. HO recovers and she returns home. SA tries to put the blame on others but HO discovers her tricks and she scolds her harshly.

All grandchildren visit LAI with a birthday cake made by HO on her birthday and LAI is overjoyed. While trying to look for a hair dryer, WING HO finds SUM in her room. SUM shows him the trophies she has got in school. WING HO discovers that SUM is still keeping the cassette tapes he sent to her long time ago and he feels very happy. KA discovers that ELIZA always gives YUET a hard time. He tries to record ELIZA’s voice when she scolds YUET and then plays it in front of everybody. ELIZA is deeply embarrassed and she fires YUET. KA reveals that he is going to open a PR firm and CHO asks him to design the promotional plan for their wedding cakes. CHO shares KA’s idea with HUNG but HUNG discloses KA’s plan to ELIZA. During the promotional event, ELIZA plays tricks on KA and all 38 pairs of couples that KA invited fail to show up on the day.

HUNG learns that CHO is staying in HO’s home for a celebration party and she is displeased. HUNG finds YUEN sitting by the pool alone for YUEN has lost his love recently. She encourages YUEN to concentrate on his work instead but she finds that YUEN hasn’t think about the promotional plan at all 3 days later. HUNG wants to fire KUNG for not teaching YUEN properly. She also forces CHO not to see HO and the children again. HING suddenly resigns and WING HO is puzzled. WING HO and SUM find that HING is arguing with a man called KA LOK on the street. They rush to HING’s side to protect her. LOK asks HING out and he reveals to her that he wants a separation because she is mute. HUNG and LAI return from a hot spring trip in China. KUNG reports to them that CHO is keeping contact with HO and the children. HUNG, LAI and KUNG visit HO. CHO hides away successfully. However, since CHO is in such a hurry, he is knocked down by a car accidentally.

CHO is frightened and he asks HO to help him. The ambulance arrives and LAI asks HO to accompany CHO to the hospital. HUNG is displeased. CHO loses his eyesight temporarily. HUNG visits him and she learns that CHO thinks that HO’s family is a happier place to stay. HUNG is enraged. SA tells everybody that HUNG wants to give 80% of the shares of “Moonlight Cake Shop” to all the children but everybody react to the news coldly. HUNG announces to the KAM’s family that she has decided to pass “Moonlight Cake Shop” to all the children and she will travel around the world with CHO for 2 years. HUNG learns that ELIZA is attacking KA’s company all the time and she tries to help KA. CHUNG reveals to HO that he has quit his job as a computer salesman because HUNG has promised to appoint him as a manager in the IT department of “Moonl

SA tries to speculate on properties but she fails to sell the premises. She asks all family members to give her money. She thinks that the family’s money is her money and everybody finds her unreasonable. SA asks LAI out and she reveals to LAI that HO is making use of the children to take revenge on KAM’s family. She suggests LAI to organize a birthday party for HO in order to please her. During the birthday party, all the old neighbors who had moved to other countries return to see HO. It was CHO who paid for the air tickets secretly. All children try to perform a comedy to HO as well during the party. SUM meets a pregnant woman in the shopping center and this woman is about to deliver her baby suddenly. While trying to help her, she meets Dr LING CHI SHUN. CHO suddenly visits HO and he asks HO to allow their children to work for Moonlight Cake Shop. In order to settle the matter, HO tries to visit HUNG at the head office for a meeting. HUNG keeps HO from waiting for a long time and HO is enraged. HO fin bursts into the meeting room to negotiate with HUNG.

SUM meets SHUN after work. SHUN invites her to visit the baby together. They become so familiar that they start calling each other brother and sister. CHO wants to join the birthday celebration for HING at HO’s place. HUNG deliberately breaks CHO’s glasses and plays tricks to make him stay in the street. HUNG suggests KA to take care of all the promotional campaign for Moonlight Cake Shop. KA is in great debt and he agrees reluctantly. Everybody goes to KAM’s family for dinner. HUNG brings KA and other staffs to home and she reveals that KA is going to produce a TV commercial for Moonlight Cake Shop. KUNG suggests that they could replay a past incident when HUNG lost her baby accidentally because of YUEN. KA cannot bear to disclose the truth to everybody. He reveals that HUNG deliberately asked KUNG to shift the guilt to YUEN for her miscarriage. CHO is enraged and he claims that he would kick out anybody who disturbs the harmony of the family.

MUI invites HUNG for tea and HUNG asks for some antihypertensive medicine. In the evening, HUNG deliberately mentions the case of YUEN to SUM and she tries to speak for herself with excuses. HUNG tells her story agitatedly and she collapses suddenly. LOK and HING meet each other in the rain and they decide to reunite with each other. WING HO returns home and discovers that everybody is cheerful. This is because SA has discovered that HING and LOK are dating again. LOK’s mother KUEN even suggests that the two families should meet each other. HO and the family members meet KUEN for tea but KUEN suddenly leaves. HO rushes out and KUEN reveals that she doesn’t want her son to date with HING. LOK goes to HO’s place for dinner secretly but KUEN discovers it. HO rushes back to mediate between them and she speaks for KUEN. SHUN invites SUM for a seafood dinner at Lamma Island and they find that they share a lot of common interests. In the evening, KUEN suddenly arrives at HO’s place with LOK. KUEN tries to taNG with sign language and HO helps to do the translation.

SUM meets SHUN at the hospital. She discovers many baby photos with thank you letters in SHUN’s office and her impression on SHUN is getting even better. HUNG’s ex-husband HAK KEUNG suddenly comes to look for her at Moonlight Cake Shop but HUNG treats him coldly. HUNG reveals to LAI that she wants to travel around the world with CHO for 2 years. CHO reveals the travel plan to his children at HO’s place and all the children are dissatisfied. CHO becomes drunk at HO’s place and he asks everybody to scold him. On the next day when CHO leaves, all the children say that they have forgiven him. SHUN plays trick to date SUM again after work and they spend a romantic evening together. The doctor tells LAI that she is suffering from Myodegeneratio cordis and LAI is worried. HUNG worries that if LAI reveals her disease to everybody, her travel plan will be cancelled. She therefore lies to LAI that HAK KEUNG is harassing her all the time and LAI decides to cover up her health problem.

LAI asks WING HO and TING out but she fails to show up. WING HO discovers that LAI has collapsed at the bridge. KUNG informs HUNG that LAI is in the hospital and HUNG decides not to tell CHO about this. KUNG calls HUNG again. He lies to HUNG that LAI has wakened up for a while and she has apologized to HO when she’s awake. HUNG is enraged and she further confirms that she will not tell CHO about LAI’s case. MUI wants to call HUNG but KUNG stops her. Their conversation is overheard by YUET. YUET tells HO about this and HO begs MUI to give her the telephone number of HUNG but KUNG stops her from doing so. LAI’s condition is getting worse at midnight. HO is frightened. She shouts to LAI desperately and encourages her to carry on. LAI finally survives the critical phase. SHUN invites SUM to Lamma Island again and they spends the whole evening talking to each oth

KA and YUET return home to find SA and MEI coming back as well. They also meet SA’s friend YUEN YAN TSZ and his mother. KA is shocked to find that MEI is such a beautiful woman. SA brings MEI to her room but MEI blames SA for not being considerate to other family members. YUET overhears their conversation. She tells everybody that TSZ is going to marry SA. MEI learns that KA is organizing a promotional event on aerobics and she voluntarily offers herself as the dancer. SA suggests postponing their wedding date and TSZ starts a quarrel with her. SUM discovers that SHUN is trying to keep a distance from her and she goes to Lamma Island alone. SUM meets SHUN there and SHUN reveals to her that he has got a 7-year girlfriend already. SUM decides to stop going further with SHUN. SA announces to everybody that she is going to get married with TSZ. She also suggests appointing TSZ as the shop manager of their cake shop and everyone is shocked.
