Ramses the Great: King of Ancient Egypt

In 1323 BC, Egypt was still in the chaos left by Akhenaten's attempted religious revolution when his son died. The 18th dynasty came to an end in a state of disorder and confusion.

Upon Horemheb's demise, Paramessou ascended to the throne of Egypt under the name of Ramses I. However, his son Seti succeeded him as the new pharaoh.

Seti I died unexpectedly in 1279 BC. Despite the brevity of his 10-year reign, it gave Prince Ramses time to prepare for his future role as king.

After reigning for just five years, Ramses the Great had already earned the distinction of being the most feared and respected among warrior pharaohs.

Ramses, now revered as ‘Ramses-great-in-victories’, had ascended to the status of a veritable living god, celebrated within his borders and beyond.

During his remarkable 67-year reign, Ramses fortified borders, established peace between kingdoms, and erected unparalleled temples.
