Oliver has refused to become a pickpocket, so Fagin forces him to go on a burglary with Bill Sikes.

Bill Sikes has left Oliver for dead. Badly wounded, he is arrested as the burglar's accomplice.

Oliver has been befriended by Mrs Maylie and her adopted daughter. Rose is struck down by a dangerous fever.

Harry Maylie's arrival has helped Rose recover from her illness but she still refuses to permit their marriage.

Monks has destroyed the last clue to Oliver's identity, but Nancy has warned Rose of the danger.

Mr Brownlow, now reunited with Oliver, has joined with the Maylies to defeat Monks's conspiracy.

Nancy is killed for trying to save Oliver. Fagin has disbanded his gang as the police close in on the murderer.
