S05:E06 - Doctor Robot

When Alex (Erica Durance) gets a call that her home alarm is going off, she is surprised when she arrives and finds Martha (Jennifer Dale), her estranged mother, cleaning her condo. Her surprise turns to embarrassment, however, when her mother assumes Manny (Jared Joseph) is her new boyfriend. The next day, Alex and Maggie (Julia Taylor Ross) check in on the participants of their cancer trial, and Maggie is upset to learn that Bree (Rebecca Liddiard) is not responding to the medication. Bree takes a turn for the worse, and while Alex advocates surgery, Maggie wants to treat Bree’s problem less invasively, which would keep Bree in the study. They ask Charlie (Michael Shanks), the newly-appointed Chief of Surgery, for his opinion, and Charlie sides with Maggie, much to Alex’s consternation. Maggie and Alex are forced to operate, however, putting Bree in a coma. Meanwhile Martha, while bringing Luke in to check a bump on his head, exhibits strange behavior that causes Shahir (Huse Madhavji) to keep Martha in for examinations. Zach (Benjamin Ayres) is reluctantly transitioning the E.R. to an Urgent Care facility, until a patient who bucks societal conventions persuades Zach not to settle for second best, and he sadly tells Charlie that he quits. And later in the evening, Charlie meets an old flame (Kristin Lehman) for a drink, while Manny brings Alex dinner and a sweet kiss.
