1919. In Paris, the Treaty of Versailles is closed. Silvio Crespi negotiates for Italy. Former soldier Rudol Hoess hates how Germany is humiliated.

In Europe, inflation and unemployment rise inexorably. May Picqueray joins a group of Parisian anarchists. Social unrests also impact Silvia Crespi's textile firm.

Nguen Ai Quoc joins the Communist International in Moscow and trains as revolutionary. Rudolf Hoess places his hopes on a new politician, Adolf Hitler.

Mass unemployment reaches its peak. Adolf Hitler takes power. Pola Negri loses her fortune. Young aristocrat Unity Mitford is enthralled by Hitler.

Communist Hans Beimler heads for the Spanish civil war to fight in the International Brigade. Marcel Jamet is successful, with his brothel and spying for the French.

Disillusioned, Unity Mitford returns to Britian. Marcel Jamet builds a bunker underneath his brothel. Pola Negri seeks to get out of her contract with UFA and out of Germany.
