The Repair Shop
Season 5 Episode 50 - Ice Cream Maker, Organillo, Leather Document Case
Today in the Repair Shop, Jay Blades and the team bring four treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. First into the Repair Shop is Peter Mason from Herefordshire. He's brought a kitchen curiosity from a bygone age for metal craftsman, Dominic Chinea. The old fashioned ice cream maker belonged to his beloved Granny Ethel and holds memories of happy times at her house churning vanilla ice cream together. The gadget is falling apart and Peter has grand plans to use it again, if it can be salvaged. Dom rebuilds the failing wooden bucket, securing it with new steel barrel hoops and enlists Steve's help to custom make a couple of brass bushes to ensure the churning paddle turns smoothly. The mechanism is re-chromed and assembled and there's a sweet treat in store for Peter on his return.Lots of fun is had when organ restorer David Burville takes on a mini Spanish barrel organ, known as an organillo. It reminds owner Carolina Urraca of her childhood growing up in southern Spain and her charismatic grandmother. However the little organ is seriously out of tune and in a sorry state. David overhauls the entire instrument, inside and out. The musical cylinders are almost too far gone but David pervails, before moving on to the wooden casing, ridding it of its copious scratches and watermarks. After days of hard graft, the organillo belts out pitch perfect tunes and Carolina is over the moonLast to arrive is Malcom Jordan from Chippenham, with a treasure that has been in his possession for 65 years. The leather document case was a gift from his older brother, whom he idolised. Leather expert Susie Fletcher treats this fragile keepsake with utmost care...reinforcing and restitching the entire item and in doing so preserves it for the foreseeable future.
