We’re rolling out the barrels with our bromancing draymen, Steve and Darren, they’ve been delivering together for over a decade from the Ringwood brewery near Southampton. But it’s a frantic Friday as the pubs are desperate to restock their cellars in time for a busy weekend, but after record rainfall, the draymen’s day could hit the skids. With Britain’s great love of beer showing no sign of drying up, Marston’s are opening 30 brand new pubs a year. Building from scratch means every last detail can be carefully planned, but just how many men does it take to build a pub? On day two of the cellar fit out in Shrewsbury things aren’t going to plan for the A-le team, this crack unit usually work like clockwork, but today they have to battle a 25 metre special pipe, known as the python, can the team finish the fit and get the pints pumping? In Wolverhampton it’s Bill Humpherson’s job to get down and dirty, scrubbing the fermenting vessels to stop us getting bits in our beer. But today grime gouger, Bill’s got a problem, the carbon dioxide levels have suddenly shot up to potentially lethal levels that could put the brewery in lockdown.. And we meet fleet manager Graham Benford, aka ‘the man who can’. In his day job, he is a maestro of maintenance management, but when the Burton brewery throws open its doors for a festival to celebrate St George’s day, it’s not just battling dragons Graham has to worry about.
