Bernie Turns a Murder Case Into a Popularity Contest on Tubi

Everybody loves the nice guy in town. The one who remembers your birthday, volunteers at every community event, and somehow knows exactly what to say when life gets difficult. He's practically a local treasure. Now imagine that same beloved neighbor becoming the center of a murder investigation. Suddenly, the town gossip has a very different agenda, and the church ladies are going to need another pot of coffee.

Arriving November 9 on Tubi, Bernie introduces Bernie Tiede, a mild-mannered funeral director in Carthage, Texas, whose kindness has made him one of the community's most adored residents. His unlikely friendship with Marjorie Nugent, a wealthy widow known for being less popular, raises a few eyebrows around town. But as their relationship grows complicated, the story takes a turn that nobody's Sunday school lessons could've prepared them for.

Carthage has plenty of opinions about the scandal, and the townspeople aren't particularly interested in keeping them to themselves. Even as the investigation unfolds, conversations about Bernie's character become almost as important as the evidence itself. Director Richard Linklater brings those competing perspectives to life through documentary-style interviews and colorful local commentary, making the community's reactions part of the film's peculiar humor.

Fans of outrageous real-life stories will feel right at home with the darkly funny mysteries in Tubi's Dark Comedies collection. Bernie brings its own peculiar brand of humor to the genre, finding absurdity in the uncomfortable gap between what people believe about someone and what that person might actually be capable of.
