Black Christmas Is Getting a Head Start on the Holiday Scares

Christmas break turns into a slasher nightmare when the 2006 holiday horror favorite Black Christmas arrives on Tubi November 1.

Remind Me

Halloween gets October 31. Christmas horror would like to call dibs on November 1.

Black Christmas arrives on Tubi just as the pumpkins are heading back into storage, trading trick-or-treaters for a snowed-in sorority house where staying in for the holidays becomes a spectacularly bad decision. A winter storm has left a group of sisters at their campus house over Christmas break when an escaped killer begins making his way back toward a place with a particularly ugly connection to his past.  So much for a silent night.

Writer-director Glen Morgan's 2006 reimagining of the influential 1974 slasher takes the original's holiday nightmare and pushes it toward something bloodier and more elaborate. The decorations are cheerful. The weather outside is frightful. Threatening phone calls and disappearing housemates are less committed to the festive atmosphere.

The cast makes revisiting this version especially fun now. Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Lacey Chabert all enter the house before several of them became closely associated with the horror, thriller, comedy, and television roles audiences know them for today. Andrea Martin even returns after appearing in the 1974 Black Christmas, giving the remake a direct connection to the movie whose sorority-house nightmare started the franchise.

November 1 may technically move us out of spooky season, but horror clearly hasn't received the calendar invite. Terror on Tubi makes that handoff from Halloween to holiday horror feel a little less abrupt, especially once Black Christmas starts putting its own sinister spin on the holiday decorations.

The Cast

Katie Cassidy as Kelli

Someone has to keep a clear enough head to realize Christmas break has gone very, very wrong. Cassidy gives Kelli a grounded survival instinct that grows sharper as the sorority house turns from familiar space into hunting ground. Her fear never disappears; Cassidy lets it evolve into determination, making Kelli a steady point of focus while the slasher chaos escalates around her.

Michelle Trachtenberg as Melissa

Trachtenberg brings Melissa an easy, conversational energy that helps the sorority dynamic feel lived-in before anyone has reason to start watching the hallways. As the mood shifts, her reactions help bridge the movie's early friend-group familiarity with the realization that whatever is happening inside the house is no longer something they can explain away.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Heather

Heather gives Winstead room to play a sharper, more guarded personality within the ensemble. Her attitude and nervous energy distinguish Heather from the women around her without pushing the character outside the group dynamic. Long before several of her later genre roles, Black Christmas was already giving Winstead the chance to play someone trying to maintain her composure while the situation becomes impossible to dismiss.

Lacey Chabert as Dana

Holiday cheer is not Dana's strongest survival strategy. Chabert leans into her outspoken, reactive personality, making Dana register quickly even within a crowded sorority-house ensemble. There's a darkly playful quality to the performance that fits the movie around her: danger may be closing in, but Dana doesn't suddenly stop being Dana just because somebody started screaming.
