The Red Flags Aren't Just in the Romance Novel in Bite Size Terror's Book Club

One scandalous romance novel has a suburban reading circle completely hooked. Episode 8 of Tubi's horror anthology makes the next chapter worth questioning.

Watch Now

Book clubs have survived some pretty scandalous fictional romances. Forbidden affairs, questionable love interests, enough red flags to decorate an entire neighborhood. Usually, the worst consequence is someone passionately defending a character who absolutely does not deserve it. Well, somebody's about to take literary obsession a little too far.

Episode 8 of Bite Size Terror, Tubi's Original horror anthology, has a new chapter in mind for suburban entertainment. In “Book Club”, a lonely newcomer joins a group of women whose fascination with a lurid romance novel goes well beyond the occasional heated discussion. She's hoping to make friends, but this particular reading circle might have a few surprises waiting between the pages.

Romance readers know that a questionable fictional love interest can inspire some very passionate defenses. But there's a difference between defending a character's red flags and treating their behavior like a relationship manual. “Book Club” plays with that distinction, making the group's enthusiasm feel a little less innocent than your average literary debate.

The anthology has made a habit of finding trouble in places nobody thought to check. Our guide to Bite Size Terror's ten standalone nightmares offers a look at the other everyday situations that have gone spectacularly wrong, while Terror on Tubi has more reasons to reconsider your evening plans.

A little reading advisory: light spoilers for “Book Club” are ahead. We promise there won't be a quiz afterward.

The Book Club From Hell

Everyone has encountered a fictional romance that inspires an unreasonable amount of devotion. Maybe it's a love triangle that has divided the internet, a morally questionable love interest with an impressive fan club, or a plot twist that practically demands an emergency group chat. Now imagine walking into a room where everyone has taken that enthusiasm to an entirely different level.

The book club in “Book Club” revolves around a lurid romance novel, giving the episode a deliciously scandalous starting point. Picture sitting down with a group of enthusiastic readers, only to realize their favorite book has practically become required knowledge. Every reference, every passionate opinion, every knowing glance reminds you that everyone else seems to be operating with information you don't have. Suddenly, the usual book club conversation sounds like something you'd rather observe from a safe distance.

Romance fiction gives readers permission to enjoy outrageous fantasies without having to deal with the consequences. A character can make one terrible decision after another, and we can happily keep turning the pages. But imagine hearing those same decisions discussed with a level of enthusiasm that makes you wonder whether everyone else remembers they're fictional. Who knew the most controversial book club selection could come with consequences beyond a heated Goodreads review?

When Fitting In Comes With Terms and Conditions

Making friends in a new place can feel like arriving halfway through a television series. Everyone already knows the characters, the running jokes, and which relationships are complicated. You're just trying to figure out where you fit into the story.

Imagine finally receiving an invitation from people who seem genuinely interested in getting to know you. You pick out something to wear, prepare a few conversation starters, and arrive hoping this might become a regular part of your week. Then the evening starts moving in a direction you weren't prepared for. How quickly do you admit you're uncomfortable when you've spent so much time hoping to be included?

The newcomer in “Book Club” enters a room where everyone else already seems to know the rules. Asking questions might make her feel like even more of an outsider, but playing along means navigating a conversation she doesn't fully understand. It's an uncomfortable balancing act when all she wanted was a chance to make friends.

Every unfamiliar social circle has its own little rituals, but there's a point where trying to be polite becomes its own problem. An awkward exchange might be easy to dismiss. A second strange interaction becomes harder to ignore. By the time you're questioning whether you should've left earlier, admitting you're uncomfortable might feel more difficult than simply staying.

Behind the Bite

Writer-director Hannah Alline has chosen an unexpectedly ordinary setting for a horror story. Suburban book clubs are usually associated with cozy living rooms, friendly conversation, and the occasional disagreement over whether the ending was satisfying. Here, that familiarity works against the audience. The setting offers none of the obvious warning signs of traditional horror, leaving the social interactions themselves to create unease.

Alline's ensemble includes Brit MacRae, Bethany Anne Lind, Mabel Thomas, Annie Jacob, Najah Bradley, Tenea Intriago, and Kevin L. Johnson. An ensemble gives a story like this plenty of opportunities to make an ordinary conversation feel unpredictable. A reaction from someone across the room, an interruption, or a moment when everyone seems to agree can change how a newcomer interprets the people around her. Instead of looking for one obvious threat, viewers have an entire group to keep an eye on.

The 12-minute runtime also suits a story built around an uncomfortable gathering. Viewers have little time to get acquainted with the group before they're trying to read the room themselves. The short format keeps the experience concentrated, making every unfamiliar personality and unanswered question another reason to pay attention.

The next time someone recommends joining a book club, maybe ask for the reading list first. Preferably with references.
