Chris Rock's semi-autobiographical sitcom about surviving school, family, and growing up makes your first week back look surprisingly manageable.
Watch NowBack-to-school season means new classes, new teachers and approximately five minutes before something embarrassing happens in front of everyone. Chris would know. Everybody Hates Chris, Chris Rock's semi-autobiographical sitcom inspired by his childhood, spends four seasons putting young Chris through junior-high bullies, bad grades, crushes, picture day, and eventually the terrifying upgrade to high school.
And even if you haven't watched every episode, you've probably met the Rock family somewhere on your feed. Julius calculating the exact financial consequences of somebody touching the thermostat. Rochelle being one inconvenience away from reminding everyone that her man has two jobs. Tonya preparing an accusation that will absolutely become Chris's problem. The series has basically become its own reaction language online.
While school is officially back in session, consider Everybody Hates Chris on Tubi required extracurricular viewing. You can find all four seasons alongside even more class clowns, troublemakers, and hallway chaos in Tubi's Back to School collection.
Williams makes Chris's constant misfortune work because his Chris is equal parts hopeful, awkward, and increasingly exhausted by the universe's commitment to humbling him. The facial reactions alone can tell you exactly when Chris realizes this is somehow going to be his fault.
Crews plays Julius, Chris's father, with wonderful seriousness, making every grocery bill and electricity calculation feel like a genuine family emergency. But underneath the legendary frugality is a dad constantly working to provide for his family.
Arnold’s Rochelle gives Chris's mother enough authority that a change in her voice alone can tell you somebody in that house is in trouble. She plays Rochelle big without making her one-note, balancing the explosive reactions with enough warmth that you understand exactly why everybody fears disappointing her almost as much as they fear getting caught.
Hakim gives Chris's little sister, Tonya, a perfectly innocent exterior and just enough mischief underneath it that you can practically watch her deciding how to make the current situation her brother's problem. Chris is already fighting for his life at school. Coming home to Tonya does not improve his odds.
“You can hate all you want, but I already did the math.”
