Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age knockout knows every argument, crush, and tiny humiliation by heart.
Watch NowThere’s a moment in your teens when your perfectly normal life suddenly becomes unacceptable. Your hometown is too small. Your parents are doing too much. Your clothes feel wrong. Even your name might need a rebrand. You don’t know exactly who you’re becoming yet, but you just know something has got to change.
Lady Bird gets that restless feeling perfectly. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson wants out of Sacramento and into a bigger, more interesting life, but senior year has a few things to say first: questionable crushes, shifting friendships, money stress, and a mother-daughter relationship where “I love you” and “you’re driving me insane” are basically interchangeable.
That’s what makes the movie hit whether senior year was yesterday or decades ago. Lady Bird remembers when growing up felt like becoming a whole new person, only to realize that some of the people, places, and painfully uncool things you were desperate to leave behind might be the ones you miss most.
Ronan plays Lady Bird like a person trying to outrun her own skin. Every eye roll, lie, and apology lands with comic precision and real ache. She makes teenage self-invention feel heroic, petty, and completely recognizable.
Metcalf gives Marion a love language made of worry, correction, and receipts. She never softens the edges just to make us comfortable, which is why the mother-daughter friction feels so alive. Her performance is a locked door with a porch light on.
Feldstein makes Julie the kind of best friend every coming-of-age story needs: funny, loyal, wounded, and not here to be a sidekick forever. She gives the movie its sweetest laughs and reminds Lady Bird what being seen actually costs.
Every teenager deserves one crush who teaches them that being mysterious and being interesting are not necessarily the same thing. Chalamet’s Kyle has the hair, the musician energy, and the confidence of a boy who has definitely said something pretentious at a party and waited for everyone to be impressed. Consider him a rite of passage.
“I want to go where culture is, and yes, I will be dramatic about it.”
