Being a Final Girl is a job nobody applies for, but Final Girl horror movies keep proving someone has to survive the shift. One minute you’re going to prom, taking a road trip, or hanging out with your friends. The next, everyone around you is making increasingly terrible survival decisions and somehow you’re the one expected to figure out the escape route. No training. No warning. Terrible benefits.
The Final Girl trope has given horror some of its most memorable survivors, from Sidney Prescott knowing better than to trust anyone with Ghostface around to Veronica deciding she'd rather hunt the hunters. Scream
Sidney Prescott doesn't begin Scream looking to become one of the most iconic Final Girls in horror. She's a high schooler still grieving her mother's death when a masked killer starts targeting Woodsboro, turning her friends, boyfriend, and basically anyone with access to a telephone into a potential suspect.
Neve Campbell is a huge reason Sidney became the blueprint. She's vulnerable without ever feeling helpless, smart without magically knowing she's in a horror movie, and increasingly unwilling to play by Ghostface's rules. By the time Sidney starts fighting back, you're not just hoping she survives. You're realizing Ghostface seriously underestimated his Final Girl.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Erin thinks she's on a road trip with her friends. Leatherface has other plans. Jessica Biel spends The Texas Chainsaw Massacre getting put through an almost comically awful series of situations as a drive through Texas leads her group straight into the Hewitt family's orbit and one of the 2000s' most relentless slasher movie survival stories.
Biel makes Erin's transformation into Final Girl survivor mode feel earned because she never suddenly becomes superhuman. She's terrified, physically exhausted, and still thinking fast enough to keep moving. Some Final Girls get a carefully constructed plan. Erin gets rural Texas, Leatherface, and approximately zero good options. She works with what she has.
Prom Night
Donna Keppel has already survived more than enough before Prom Night even gets to, well, prom night. Brittany Snow's Donna is trying to move forward from a traumatic past and enjoy one aggressively glamorous evening with her friends when the man responsible for that trauma returns to finish what he started, turning a high school milestone into a full-blown slasher nightmare.
Snow gives Donna a softer kind of Final Girl strength. Her fear comes from knowing exactly what she's facing, which makes every attempt to fight through it feel more personal. Also, surviving prom is difficult enough when the biggest threat is awkward dancing and regrettable formalwear. Donna deserved considerably better.
The Final Girls
The Final Girls doesn't just give us a Final Girl. It takes the classic Final Girl trope itself and puts it under a microscope, adds an '80s summer-camp slasher, and somehow finds genuine feelings underneath all the blood. Taissa Farmiga's Max gets pulled into a cult horror movie starring her late mother, Nancy, played by Malin Akerman, and quickly realizes knowing the rules of a slasher movie doesn't necessarily make surviving them easier.
It knows every slasher cliché you're expecting and has fun rearranging them, but Max and Nancy's relationship keeps the movie from becoming one long wink at horror fans. Turns out the Final Girl can deliver meta comedy, killer survival instincts, and an emotional gut punch. Rude, but impressive.
Final Girl
At first glance, Abigail Breslin's Veronica looks like exactly the kind of young woman four murderous boys would expect to become their next victim in Final Girl. There is, however, one fairly important detail they missed: Veronica has been trained to kill them, flipping the traditional Final Girl setup completely on its head.
Breslin plays her with a cool restraint that makes the reversal especially satisfying. Veronica doesn't spend the movie discovering that she can fight back. She walks into the situation knowing precisely what she's capable of and waits for the boys to realize they've chosen very, very poorly. Final Girl energy, but make the killers need an escape plan.
