School Ties, the 1992 teen drama recently added to Tubi, now has a cast list that reads less like one movie and more like somebody accidentally put Hollywood's future in matching blazers.
The “wait, HE'S in this too?” factor may get you through the door, but School Ties has considerably more going on than its future-famous cast. Fraser plays David Greene, a working-class Jewish teenager whose football talent earns him a scholarship to an elite New England prep school in the 1950s. There's just one major problem: David quickly realizes that fitting into this polished world may depend on hiding his Jewish identity. What looks like the ultimate new-kid fresh start becomes a much sharper coming-of-age drama about antisemitism, class, privilege, and belonging when acceptance comes with conditions.
Come for the future A-listers before the Oscars, Batman suits, and action franchises. Stay because School Ties gave its future A-list cast material worth watching before anyone knew just how famous they'd become.
The Cast
Brendan Fraser as David Greene
Fraser gives David an easy confidence that makes it believable he could walk into St. Matthew's and quickly find his footing, while quietly letting the strain of hiding his identity build underneath it. There's a warmth to the performance, but Fraser knows exactly when to let David's anger break through. The charm gets him through the door. The backbone is what makes David memorable.
Chris O'Donnell as Chris Reece
O'Donnell gives David's roommate Chris an approachable, boy-next-door quality that makes him an easy presence in David's new circle. But as the school's uglier side emerges, O'Donnell lets Chris's uncertainty reveal how much easier being “a good guy” is when nobody is asking you to prove it.
Matt Damon as Charlie Dillon
Damon makes Charlie the kind of privileged prep-school golden boy who has rarely been told the world might not bend his way. Instead of playing him as an obvious villain from the jump, Damon lets jealousy, entitlement, and prejudice gradually curdle underneath the polished exterior.
Ben Affleck as Chesty Smith
And yes, that's a very young Affleck hanging around the halls as Chesty Smith. It's a smaller role, and Affleck plays him as part of the larger prep-school pack rather than fighting for attention. Which honestly makes spotting him more fun: future Oscar winner, filmmaker, and Batman currently reporting for ensemble duty.
