Roberts enters the movie carrying a completely different kind of unease. Her Joan is guarded, exhausted, and difficult to read, with Roberts stripping away much of the sharp, charismatic energy horror fans may associate with some of her other roles. There's a heaviness to the performance that makes even Joan's quieter moments feel loaded with something we haven't been told yet.
Shipka makes quiet feel dangerous. As Kat, the younger student stranded at the school, Shipka keeps so much happening just underneath the surface that even the smallest glance or change in expression starts feeling like evidence. It's a wonderfully restrained performance that never rushes to explain what Kat is thinking, leaving you to sit with the increasingly uncomfortable feeling that something about her is very, very off.
Boynton gives Rose the prickly confidence of an older student who would rather be almost anywhere else, but she gradually lets that composure crack as the isolation around her becomes harder to dismiss. Boynton plays Rose's fear more immediate and recognizably human, which makes watching her realize this might be more than an inconvenient winter break especially unnerving.
