Ghost hunting operates on a fascinating contradiction. You enter a place because you want proof the paranormal is real, then the second an object moves on its own, every survival instinct you have starts suggesting that proof was unnecessary. Suddenly the mysterious footsteps aren't exciting evidence. They're a very compelling reason to remember where you parked.
Maybe that's why watching somebody else investigate is so satisfying. From the couch, we're incredibly brave. We notice the shadow in the corner. We hear the noise upstairs. We have several opinions about why nobody should enter the basement. Most importantly, nobody expects us to follow them.

The rotating guests are part of what makes the hunt different and fun. Everybody arrives carrying their own combination of curiosity, skepticism, nerves, and confidence, while Kelsi is already comfortable enough around paranormal investigation to keep asking questions after someone else might've politely suggested leaving. Our Wanna Go Ghost Hunting? spotlight goes deeper into Kelsi and the crew for anyone ready to join the investigation without physically entering a haunted building. We're counting that as bravery.

When reports of unexplained activity become difficult enough to ignore, the paranormal investigators of Ghost Hunters head in to figure out what might actually be happening. Rather than immediately declaring every creaking floorboard supernatural, the team documents the environment, investigates claims, and tries to determine what can be explained before labeling something paranormal.
There's something especially satisfying about watching people walk directly toward the noise everybody in a horror movie would be screaming at them to avoid. Cameras are rolling. Equipment is monitoring. Questions are being asked into apparently empty rooms.

Grave Encounters
A paranormal reality crew locks itself inside an abandoned psychiatric hospital overnight. The ghosts appreciate the convenience.
Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital is supposed to provide enough creepy footage for another episode of the ghost-hunting show at the center of Grave Encounters. Cameras are positioned. Interviews have been conducted. Everyone understands the assignment. Then the building starts providing significantly more content than production requested.
Found footage makes the investigation feel increasingly claustrophobic once the crew realizes documenting the paranormal and escaping it are becoming two very different goals. The people who entered hoping to capture evidence eventually reach the stage every ghost hunter theoretically wants: there is very clearly something happening here. Congratulations?

The Innkeepers
The Yankee Pedlar Inn is about to close permanently. Two employees would like to settle one final piece of business first. Is it haunted?
Claire and Luke spend the hotel's final days trying to document its supposed paranormal activity in The Innkeepers, using their extremely convenient access to investigate the building's history and search for evidence of its resident ghost. An almost-empty old hotel should make the job easier. Horror understands that an almost-empty old hotel actually makes everything worse.
Director Ti West lets long stretches of quiet do plenty of work, making every hallway, empty room, and unexplained sound feel worthy of another look. Claire's curiosity keeps pulling her deeper into the mystery even when the sensible amount of evidence has probably already been collected. At this point, we'd like to formally withdraw our request for a sign.

The Changeling
Sometimes the ghost isn't trying to scare you out. It wants you to figure something out.
Grieving composer John Russell moves into an enormous historic mansion hoping for solitude in The Changeling, only for unexplained sounds and increasingly strange occurrences to suggest somebody else has plans for his new home. George C. Scott gives John the patience to investigate rather than immediately flee, gradually following the haunting toward a history the house has been holding onto.
Every disturbance feels less random once John begins treating it like information, turning the haunting into a trail somebody desperately wants followed. No EMF meter required. Somehow the ghosts had narrative structure before the equipment arrived.

Poltergeist
We've spent enough time going to haunted places. Now the haunting has your address.
The Bowen family's suburban home becomes the center of increasingly aggressive supernatural activity in Poltergeist, where strange occurrences around the house escalate until youngest daughter Madison is taken by the forces invading their home. Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt lead the family trying to get her back as paranormal researchers enter a situation that has moved far beyond checking whether the lights flickered by themselves.
Nobody in the Bowen family went looking for proof. They didn't need to wonder whether the unexplained noise meant anything or whether the strange activity deserved another investigation. By the time the paranormal makes itself known, believing is the easy part.
Turns out getting proof was never the difficult part. Knowing what to do once you have it? Different story.
