Saving Hope
Season 5 Episode 13 - Problem Child
Alex (Erica Durance) is at a loss as to what has caused a dramatic shift and a former straight-A student, when he comes into the E.R. with his harried parents after hurting himself breaking into the neighbour’s house. Alex is unsure whether it’s physiological, psychological, or drug abuse that is causing the erratic behavior, extreme mood swings and insatiable appetite of a formerly model student. Charlie (Michael Shanks) speaks with the spirit version of the child – a vestige of his former self – and together they uncover an imbalance that has been causing this behaviour. When one of Dev’s (Dejan Loyola) childhood friends is brought into the hospital after being beaten by the cops, a lot of questions are raised as to who’s at fault, and if the beating was racially motivated. After talking to both the patient and the police officer that brought him in, the truth is uncovered, but not until after it’s too late for Dev’s friend. Dawn’s (Michelle Nolden) favourite heart patient – who happened to have won the lottery – becomes discouraged by the amount of time he has been waiting for his transplant. He’s given almost all of his lottery winnings away, and with the remainder would like to open a animal sanctuary, but cannot do that while sitting in a hospital bed waiting for a transplant, so Dawn comes with an outside the box (and outside the body) pacemaker that will allow the patient to leave the hospital and do his good Samaritan work while waiting for a transplant.
