Micklegate Bar, the imposing main entrance to the ancient city of York. Dating from 1196 it is the place where kings and queens have entered the city for centuries to be greeted by the sheriff, the lord mayor and other local dignitaries. But it has a darker past too, as criminals, traitors to the crown and others all passed through the gates of Micklegate Bar on the way to their deaths.
