Findlay Crawford (Billy Connolly), a famous film composer, is conducting a recording session of his latest score on a soundstage at Monolith Studios. His assistant, Gabriel McEnery (Chad Willet) is in his usual place on the roof of the stage, listening carefully to the music and making notes. He brings his suggestions to Crawford, and they are integrated into the music. When Sidney Ritter (Charles Cioffi), the film’s director, hears the score, he is delighted and congratulates Crawford heartily. Crawford doesn’t mention Gabriel’s contribution, and the young man is angry. He threatens to quit, and Crawford offers him a chance to conduct the music for "The Killer" at a benefit concert to be held on the soundstage the following evening. He also promises to convince Ritter to use Gabriel on his next film. The next day Crawford arrives and tells Gabriel that Ritter was thrilled with the idea of using him on his next film, and pours champagne for a toast. Gabriel drinks his glass down, but he suddenly falls to the floor, unconscious.
