East of Eden Is Back and Classic Literature Is Messier Than You Remember
If generational grudges, forbidden feelings, inheritance drama, and terrible communication are your thing, the classics have plenty more where that came from.
Clive Barker’s horror classic opens the puzzle box to desire, obsession, seriously gnarly body horror, and the Cenobites waiting on the other side.
Watch NowSome boxes are better left unopened. Unfortunately, Hellraiser would be a much shorter movie if anyone followed that advice.
Clive Barker turned his own novella The Hellbound Heart into a horror movie where wanting something badly enough might be the most dangerous thing you can do. At the center is Frank Cotton, a man whose search for the ultimate sensory experience leads him to a mysterious puzzle box and the Cenobites waiting on the other side. Pleasure, pain, desire, and approximately every reason to mind your own business become increasingly difficult to separate from there.
And nearly four decades later, horror fans are still willing to solve the Lament Configuration. The Cenobites have become horror royalty, Pinhead is instantly recognizable even to people who've never willingly opened the box, and Hellraiser's gloriously gooey practical effects have given generations of body-horror fans plenty to squirm over. There’s a reason the movie earned a spot in our article on 10 horror fan favorites worth dying for.
But the movie surrounding those icons is stranger, more intimate, and messier than a simple monster movie. There’s forbidden desire, family dysfunction, resurrection, betrayal, and one teenage girl who gets stuck dealing with everybody else's extremely questionable choices. You can open the box yourself with Hellraiser on Tubi, where Terror on Tubi has even more doors into the genre waiting once the Cenobites are finished with you. No promises they'll actually be finished.
Pinhead is the imposing leader among the Cenobites, beings whose understanding of pleasure and pain exists somewhere far beyond human comfort levels. Bradley doesn't need frantic movement or endless screen time to make his presence stick. The stillness, deliberate delivery, and unforgettable design do plenty of work, giving the Lead Cenobite an eerie authority that helped turn a supporting figure into one of horror's most recognizable icons.
Laurence gives Kirsty a grounded curiosity that gradually hardens into survival instinct as she realizes just how much has been happening behind closed doors. What makes her work as the movie's heroine isn't instant fearlessness; it's how quickly she learns once the impossible becomes very, very real. By the time Kirsty finds herself dealing directly with the Cenobites, Laurence makes her resourcefulness feel earned rather than inevitable.
Julia brings a different kind of danger into Hellraiser because nobody needs to summon her from another dimension. Her obsession with Frank is already doing plenty of damage here on Earth. Higgins plays Julia with a coolness that makes her increasingly horrifying choices feel almost unnervingly practical, transforming an unhappy wife carrying memories of an affair into someone willing to cross increasingly gruesome lines for the man she still desires.
Chapman gives the human version of Frank the swagger of someone who treats boundaries like invitations, making it easy to understand why the puzzle box catches his attention in the first place. Once Frank's pursuit of pleasure introduces him to the Cenobites, however, his story becomes a bit more... anatomical. Even when the character isn't exactly looking his best, Frank's selfishness remains intact, driving the resurrection plot and turning Julia's lingering desire into something much bloodier.
“Open the door. Pleasure and pain are waiting on the same side.”
