The Dog Better Survive: 6 Movies on Tubi That Put Our Priorities to the Test
Heart of the Beast has Brad Pitt fighting through the wilderness alongside his combat dog. We have one question: is the dog okay? Six movies streaming free on Tubi understand the concern.
A human character enters a dangerous situation and you think, “They'll figure it out.” A dog follows them in? Suddenly we're negotiating directly with the screen.
Heart of the Beast has reopened this extremely specific form of movie anxiety by stranding Brad Pitt's Special Forces veteran James Belmont in the Alaskan wilderness alongside his retired combat dog, Odin. Plane crash? Bad. Brutal elements? Concerning. Brad Pitt in danger? Obviously we'd prefer that not happen. But the second Odin encounters trouble, the emotional priorities become remarkably clear.
Pet people already understand. Movies have trained us to become deeply suspicious whenever an animal gets too much character development. Suddenly you're monitoring every open door, approaching vehicle, suspicious noise, wild animal, and person who says, “Stay here.” You may even pause to Google something you absolutely do not want spoiled but also desperately need answered. We're not answering it here though.
Instead, Tubi has six movies ready to test exactly how quickly your concern can migrate away from the human cast and toward whoever has four legs. Family adventures, working dogs, wilderness survival, action thrillers, and two animated movies that have absolutely no business making us this nervous are all invited. Furry Friends has plenty more four-legged scene-stealers waiting once you're done.
Runt
Ten-year-old Annie needs to save her family's farm. Runt has been assigned the group project.
Annie and her stray dog enter a prestigious dog show in Runt, hoping a big enough win can provide the money her drought-stricken family desperately needs. Suddenly teaching one scruffy dog to navigate an obstacle course has stakes extending way beyond bringing home a ribbon.
The 2024 family comedy gives us the gentlest version of our central anxiety: Runt isn't being chased through the wilderness or investigating a conspiracy. We simply need this little guy to succeed because an entire family has placed its hopes somewhere between the weave poles and the finish line. No pressure, Runt.

Guiding Emily
Garth is training to become a guide dog. Emily is learning how to navigate a life she never expected. We're already emotionally compromised.
After losing her eyesight in an accident, Emily begins rebuilding her independence in Guiding Emily while Garth struggles through guide-dog training on a path eventually bringing the two together. Sarah Drew plays Emily, while Eric McCormack lends his voice to Garth.
There's no masked killer or Alaskan wilderness required here. The investment comes from watching both sides of a partnership work toward finding each other. Every training hurdle suddenly matters because you know what Garth could eventually mean to somebody else's independence. Please pass the certification. We need this.

Muzzle
Working dogs make action movies emotionally unfair.
Muzzle doesn't wait long to prove it. LAPD officer Aaron Eckhart's Jake loses his K-9 partner in the line of duty, sending him into an investigation that eventually pairs him with another police dog as the two uncover a larger conspiracy.
This one begins from grief, so we're not treating that loss like a surprise. What becomes interesting afterward is watching trust with another K-9 have to develop while Jake is still carrying what happened to the first. Heart of the Beast understands the same thing about working dogs: “partner” isn't decorative language. By the time the new dog enters danger, congratulations. You're worried again.

Hero Dog: The Journey Home
Finally, somebody in this wilderness-survival movie appears qualified. It's the dog.
A shipwreck leaves a blind man stranded in Hero Dog: The Journey Home, where an Alaskan Malamute becomes his guide through the wilderness while his children launch a rescue attempt of their own. The 2021 adventure puts the animal in an unusually important position: he's not merely another character who needs saving. He's actively helping get everybody else home.
Coming here after Heart of the Beast feels particularly appropriate. Wilderness? Check. Human relying heavily on canine companion? Absolutely. Audience becoming convinced the dog may have the strongest survival instincts in the group? We've reviewed the résumé. Management position approved.

The Plague Dogs
They're animated. Do not let that make you feel safe.
Two dogs escape from a government research laboratory in The Plague Dogs and attempt to survive in the wild with help from a fox. John Hurt and Patrick Stewart are among the voice cast in director Martin Rosen's 1982 adaptation of Richard Adams' novel.
Their fight to survive is frightening, humans aren't automatically trustworthy, and animation gives the story exactly zero obligation to protect your feelings. Every movie on this list asks you to care about the animal. The Plague Dogs may make you regret how good you've gotten at it.
This title is available on Tubi until further notice.
All Dogs Go to Heaven
The title has already provided an extremely important piece of reassurance. Why are we still nervous?
Charlie B. Barkin begins All Dogs Go to Heaven as a canine con artist who gets murdered, escapes Heaven, and returns to Earth looking for revenge before becoming connected to Anne-Marie, an orphan who can communicate with animals. Anyone who grew up with this movie already knows how effectively colorful animation and talking animals can disguise an unexpectedly serious conversation about death, friendship, morality, and redemption.
We began this list worried whether the dog would survive. Naturally, we're ending with a movie where the dog has already passed away. Cinema has been testing pet people for generations.
