Panem has a long history of making terrible decisions look like must-see television. The Hunger Games are practically a national obsession, the Capitol has turned survival into entertainment, and somewhere in the middle of it all is a young man who thinks he has everything under control. Coriolanus Snow, we're looking at you.

Arriving on Tubi November 1, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023) takes audiences 64 years before Katniss Everdeen enters the arena, when the future president is still trying to restore his family's reputation. His opportunity arrives during the 10th annual Hunger Games, where he's assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, a District 12 tribute whose talent for commanding attention might be exactly what he needs. The problem? Snow's ambitions and Lucy Gray's survival aren't necessarily the same thing.

Panem's early Games aren't quite the elaborate spectacle fans recognize from Katniss's story, and watching the Capitol experiment with turning punishment into entertainment is disturbing in its own right. The cameras are rolling, the stakes are deadly, and the people in charge are treating the whole thing like a production that needs better ratings. Someone should probably remind them that the contestants are actual human beings.

Another trip to Panem is right around the corner. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping arrives in theaters November 20, making Snow's origin story a fitting watch ahead of the franchise's next chapter. The Capitol's appetite for control also makes The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes a natural companion to the survival stories in Tubi's Dystopian Futures collection, where questionable governments and impossible choices tend to come with the territory.

May the odds be ever in your favor. Snow certainly intends to make sure they are in his.

The Cast

Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird

Lucy Gray Baird knows how to make an entrance, even when the Capitol would prefer she quietly accept her fate. Zegler gives the District 12 tribute a magnetic combination of defiance and vulnerability, with musical performances that turn her voice into a form of resistance. Her unpredictable spirit makes her a fascinating counterpart to Snow, especially when surviving the Games means refusing to play by everyone else's rules.

Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow

Snow hasn't earned his presidential title yet, but his ambition is already working overtime. Blyth captures the future villain's polished charm and underlying desperation, making it difficult to tell when Snow is being sincere and when he's calculating his next move. The real intrigue is watching how easily his most understandable desires can lead him toward decisions that are much harder to defend.

Viola Davis as Dr. Volumnia Gaul

Dr. Gaul approaches the Hunger Games with the enthusiasm of someone unveiling a brilliant science experiment. Unfortunately, the experiment involves actual people. Davis is unsettling as the Capitol's Head Gamemaker, pairing theatrical confidence with a complete disregard for the suffering she oversees. Every interaction with Snow feels like a test, and Davis makes it difficult to predict whether Gaul is about to offer guidance or introduce another nightmare.

Peter Dinklage as Casca Highbottom

Casca Highbottom has mastered the art of making his disappointment in everyone else's existence feel personal. Dinklage portrays the Academy's dean with a weary bitterness that suggests he knows far more about the Games than he's willing to share. His hostility toward Snow hints at a history neither character is particularly eager to discuss, adding another mystery beneath the Capitol's polished exterior.

“Welcome to Panem, where every choice tells us who you'll become.”
