Weekend Picks: 5 Horror Movies to Open October With a Scream
Spooky season has officially clocked in, and five horror favorites on Tubi are ready to handle your first weekend of October.
October has officially arrived. The decorations are creeping out of storage, the group costume negotiations have begun, and now watching something terrifying from the safety of your couch feels less like a choice and more like a seasonal obligation. We already eased into the scares with our eight-movie spooky-season starter pack, but warm-ups are over. Your weekend plans however? We just found them.
But opening weekend deserves more than throwing on the first scary movie you see. We're starting with five horror heavy-hitters that Tubi viewers have already been showing plenty of love for. Not to toot our own horn, but these are the kind of picks that can pull any crowd whether you're a horror lifer or just clocking in for spooky season. Think of it as letting everyone else do a little quality control before you press play.
Terror on Tubi can take over when one movie inevitably becomes an accidental marathon. For now, October is open for screaming.
Poltergeist
Suburban dream home. Cute family. Television communicating with your youngest child. One of those things should probably concern you.
The Freelings learn pretty quickly that their seemingly ordinary home has a serious supernatural problem when strange occurrences escalate and young Carol Anne becomes caught in the middle of them. Suddenly, getting their daughter back means figuring out exactly what has moved in and why it has no intention of quietly moving out.
Poltergeist has spent decades proving that haunted-house horror doesn't need to stay confined to creaky mansions. The movie can be eerie, funny, fantastical, and genuinely frightening without losing the family at its center, while “They're here” permanently ruined television static for multiple generations.

Halloween
His movie is called Halloween. We weren't exactly going to make Michael Myers wait until November.
This isn't John Carpenter's trip to Haddonfield though. Rob Zombie puts his own much grittier stamp on the story, spending more time with Michael's beginnings before unleashing the masked killer on Halloween night. Tyler Mane makes Michael an especially imposing presence, while Scout Taylor-Compton steps into Laurie Strode's very unfortunate babysitting plans.
The result is Halloween rebuilt through Zombie's particular brand of horror: grimier, more aggressive, and interested in getting much closer to the person underneath the mask before putting it back on. For longtime franchise fans, it's a chance to see familiar horror mythology twisted into something distinctly different. For everyone else, Michael Myers stalking Haddonfield is about as seasonally appropriate as your weekend watchlist can get.

Wrong Turn
Maybe take the highway this weekend.
A group of friends heads into Appalachia for a hiking trip, where ignoring warnings to stay on the trail turns out to be a spectacularly bad decision. Deep in the mountains, they cross paths with the Foundation, an isolated community that has been living by its own rules for generations and isn't particularly thrilled to have visitors.
The wilderness does plenty of the dirty work in Wrong Turn. Remote terrain, brutal traps, and the growing realization that this community operates under an entirely different idea of justice turn a hiking trip into survival horror. Getting off the beaten path sounded more adventurous before all this. Google Maps has never looked so comforting.

The Crazies
Imagine realizing your neighbors are acting strangely and discovering that's only problem number one.
In a small Iowa town, things begin unraveling when residents start displaying increasingly violent behavior, leaving Sheriff David Dutton caught between an outbreak nobody fully understands and a military response that isn't exactly making anyone feel safer. Timothy Olyphant plays David as a man trying to protect his wife while every familiar face becomes another question mark.
Paranoia is the real fuel behind The Crazies. Who's infected? Who isn't? How long before somebody changes? Even ordinary interactions become uncomfortable when trust suddenly comes with an expiration date. We suggest maybe giving everyone a little extra personal space.

R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead
R.L. Stine knows Halloween. Unfortunately for Redhaven, he also knows exactly how to ruin one.
Sam's younger brother Finn disappears during a visit to a pumpkin patch, which would already qualify as a nightmare. Then Sam realizes nobody else remembers he ever existed. R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead sends him searching for answers through an ancient harvest curse and the creepy figures known as Pumpkinheads, giving spooky season the kind of gateway-horror mystery Stine has been serving generations of fans.
This Tubi Original also comes with a little homework assignment before next weekend. R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead 2 arrives October 9, sending us back to Redhaven for another round of supernatural trouble.
Watch the first one now. The pumpkins aren't done yet.
