Horror Never Really Lets Its Final Girls Retire
Surviving the first nightmare was hard enough. Seven horror sequels streaming on Tubi prove the Final Girl’s job is never really finished.
Horror has a terrible retirement plan. You survive the killer. You escape the curse. You crawl out of whatever basement, cave, or suspiciously foggy location tried to kill you. The credits roll, the audience exhales, and after everything you've been through, you should be entitled to a quiet little life somewhere nobody owns a chainsaw.
We have some bad news for them.
Because horror loves its monsters, but it really loves the women who survived them. We’ve already celebrated why you should never bet against the Final Girl, but surviving the first movie creates a whole new problem: eventually, somebody wants a sequel. The Final Girl grows up, moves away, changes careers, works through the trauma, and somewhere, a franchise is already figuring out how to ruin her Tuesday. It’s part of what makes legacy horror so fun. We don't just get the familiar evil back; we get to see what surviving it actually did to the person who got away.
Tubi's Final Girl Energy collection is full of women who know a thing or two about making it to the credits, while Terror on Tubi keeps the screams coming long after spooky season clocks out. As for retirement? Horror will get back to you on that.
One last thing before we clock back in: spoilers are lurking ahead. You’ve been warned.
The Rage: Carrie 2 - Sue Snell
Sue Snell survived prom night. More than two decades later, she's done something with that survival.
Now a school counselor, Sue recognizes something disturbingly familiar in Rachel Lang, an isolated teenager dealing with cruelty from her classmates and a telekinetic ability she doesn't fully understand. Amy Irving's return in The Rage: Carrie 2 creates a direct connection to Carrie without simply repeating Sue's original role in the story. She's older, carrying what happened to Carrie with her, and uniquely positioned to understand how badly things can go when everyone else dismisses a girl in pain.
There’s something especially cruel about bringing Sue back this way. She isn't returning because the same monster resurfaced; she's watching the circumstances that shaped her original nightmare begin taking form around someone else. And this time, surviving the past doesn't guarantee she'll survive its echo.

The Descent: Part 2 - Sarah Carter
Sarah Carter crawled out of one underground nightmare alive. Her reward? Going back underground.
The Descent: Part 2 picks up with Sarah traumatized, bloodied, and unable to fully remember or explain what happened to her friends below. Our spotlight on the original The Descent already went deep into the claustrophobic cave nightmare that transformed Sarah from a grieving adventurer into one of horror’s fiercest survivors. The sequel gives her approximately zero time to enjoy that accomplishment before she’s brought back into the cave system as part of the search for the missing women.
Shauna Macdonald makes Sarah feel like someone whose body escaped before the rest of her did. Pieces of what happened begin returning alongside the danger, forcing her to confront not only the creatures underground but the memories waiting there with them. The first descent was an adventure that became a nightmare. The second comes with the horrifying advantage of knowing exactly what lives in the dark. Some Final Girls get decades before horror comes calling again. Sarah barely gets daylight.

Ginger Snaps 2 - Brigitte Fitzgerald
Most survivors get to put some physical distance between themselves and whatever tried to kill them. Brigitte Fitzgerald has a slight complication there. The monster is coming from inside the house. Or, more accurately, inside Brigitte.
After losing Ginger and becoming infected herself, Brigitte enters Ginger Snaps 2 desperately trying to stop her own transformation. Her attempts to keep the infection under control land her in a rehabilitation clinic, where the treatment she actually needs isn't exactly in the medical handbook. Making matters worse, another werewolf is hunting her.
Emily Perkins takes the sardonic outsider audiences met in Ginger Snaps and pushes her somewhere more desperate and isolated. Brigitte understands the transformation better now, but knowledge doesn't make it easier to stop. Her survival story isn't about waiting for an old villain to return. Every day she remains herself is another day she hasn't become the thing she's afraid of.

Hatchet III - Marybeth Dunston
At this point, Marybeth deserves compensation.
In the wake of two encounters with Victor Crowley and enough swamp-based carnage for several lifetimes, Marybeth enters Hatchet III having learned the hard way that killing this particular slasher is easier said than permanently done. The aftermath of her latest confrontation may put her in police custody, but Crowley's night isn't over yet.
Danielle Harris brings a hardened exhaustion to Marybeth that fits someone who is well past being surprised by what she's up against. She isn't wandering into Honey Island Swamp without knowing the danger anymore; she's one of the few people who understands exactly what Crowley is and what stopping him may require. There comes a point in every recurring horror nightmare when fear starts making room for pure frustration. Marybeth reached it a few bodies ago.

The Grudge 2 - Karen Davis
Karen Davis made it out of the cursed house. Unfortunately, “out” is doing a lot of work there.
Sarah Michelle Gellar returns in The Grudge 2 with Karen still caught in the aftermath of the supernatural nightmare she encountered in Japan. Her younger sister Aubrey arrives after their mother sends her to bring Karen home, only to discover that the curse doesn't particularly care about family reunions or boundaries.
Gellar's return is smaller than some of the others on this list, but Karen's presence matters because she becomes the bridge between the original haunting and the expanding nightmare of the sequel. She's already been changed by what happened inside that house, and escaping its walls hasn't severed the connection.

Exorcist II: The Heretic - Regan MacNeil
Regan MacNeil survived one of horror's most infamous possessions as a child. Four years later, she’s older, receiving psychiatric care, and seemingly moving forward without remembering much of what happened. Pazuzu remembers enough for both of them.
Linda Blair comes back as Regan in Exorcist II: The Heretic, where attempts to understand the trauma buried in her past begin revealing that her connection to the demon may not be as finished as everyone hoped. Blair is playing a very different Regan here: no longer simply the child at the center of a possession, but a teenager trying to understand something horrifying that happened to her.
Regan may stretch the traditional definition of a Final Girl, but she fits the crueler rule at the heart of this list perfectly. She survived evil once. Evil never agreed to leave her alone.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II - Kirsty Cotton
Escaping the Cenobites should come with some kind of lifetime achievement award. Kirsty Cotton instead gets an institution and another trip toward Hell.
Hellbound: Hellraiser II picks up after the bloodshed of Hellraiser, with Kirsty hospitalized and desperately trying to convince someone that the Cenobites, the puzzle box, and everything she witnessed were very real. Unfortunately, the person listening is Dr. Channard, whose interest in the occult is way more enthusiastic than Kirsty needs it to be.
Ashley Laurence gives Kirsty more resolve the second time around without pretending her first encounter made her fearless. Once the doors to the Cenobites' world reopen, she knows better than almost anyone what waits on the other side, but eventually she has reason to venture into their labyrinth herself.
