Keelin has to face up to the news about her mother's cancer. She realizes that her family cannot cope and she has to give up her single lifestyle and move back home.

Alex, who is gay, considers starting a thing with local barman, Michael. His carefree existence is abruptly shattered however by a needle stick incident. The thought of contracting Hep C turns Alex into an unrecognizable nervous wreck, much to everyone's surprise.

Cathy and Ed attend Mary's funeral. The event gives them a chance to talk about their own grief over the baby. They are reconciled. Back at the clinic, confusion reigns while the doctors are away.
