The Witches of Eastwick Knew the Perfect Man Was Suspicious
Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer wished for the man of their dreams. Jack Nicholson answered. Nearly 40 years later, the red flags remain.
Kirsten Dunst faces a wedding, a fractured family, and a planet headed straight for Earth when Lars von Trier’s apocalyptic drama Melancholia arrives on Tubi October 16.
Remind MeThere are bad wedding omens, and then there’s discovering a planet may be headed straight for Earth. Suddenly, rain on your wedding day doesn't seem so catastrophic.
Melancholia arrives on Tubi October 16 with the end of the world hanging overhead, quite literally. But don't come looking for spaceships, heroic last-minute missions, or someone discovering the one scientific loophole that can save humanity. Lars von Trier has something much stranger and more intimate in mind. As a mysterious planet creeps closer to Earth, one lavish wedding begins falling apart, two sisters find themselves responding very differently to what may be coming, and the question shifts from can anyone stop this? to what do you do when you can't?
Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg anchor a story where impending doom can be eerily beautiful one moment and completely terrifying the next. The cosmic threat may be impossible to look away from, but it’s the people underneath it and their fears, fractures, and very different ways of facing the inevitable that make the movie hit.
With an emotional and literal collision on the way, Melancholia is right at home alongside Tubi’s Drama collection, where complicated people and even more complicated feelings are never in short supply.
Justine is supposed to be having one of the happiest nights of her life, yet maintaining that picture becomes harder with every passing moment. Dunst lets the bride’s carefully composed exterior gradually fall away, moving between forced celebration, detachment, and an eerie calm as everything around her becomes increasingly uncertain. Her performance makes Justine difficult to look away from precisely because she doesn't react the way everyone expects her to, even with an entire planet looming overhead.
Claire spends much of the story trying to create order where there increasingly isn't any, first as the sister attempting to keep Justine and her elaborate wedding from unraveling and later as the possibility of catastrophe becomes impossible to dismiss. Gainsbourg brings a nervous urgency to Claire that grows alongside the threat in the sky, making every crack in her composure feel increasingly significant.
Facts are John's comfort zone, and Sutherland plays Claire's husband with the confidence of someone convinced there must be a rational explanation for what's happening above them. His certainty offers reassurance when everyone else begins to worry, but Sutherland gradually lets the pressure underneath that confidence show as circumstances become harder to explain away.
“Come for the wedding. Stay while the sky changes everything.”
