The Cast
Adam Sandler
Sandler plays Paul Crewe with the laid-back confidence of a former star who knows exactly how good he used to be and exactly how far he's fallen since. Sandler lets his usual dry humor do plenty of work, but he also gives Crewe enough competitive fire to make his reluctant return to football feel like more than another joke. Sandler never turns him into a rah-rah sports hero; there's still plenty of Crewe's sarcasm and ego underneath the coach.
Chris Rock
Rock gives Caretaker the kind of fast-talking charisma that makes him feel like the person who somehow knows everybody, knows everything, and probably knows where to get whatever you need. Rock's comic timing gives the movie some of its easiest laughs, but his chemistry with Sandler also makes Caretaker feel essential to Crewe's growing connection with the team rather than simply the guy supplying punchlines.
Burt Reynolds
There's an old-school steadiness to Reynolds' Nate Scarborough that immediately separates him from the louder personalities surrounding him. Reynolds plays the former football legend as someone who doesn't need to prove he belongs on the field anymore; a look, a correction, or a few carefully chosen words are usually enough to establish his authority. That confidence carries extra weight because Reynolds played Paul Crewe in the original 1974 The Longest Yard, creating a direct connection between the two versions of the football comedy.
